Hands On notbook - Lenovo's MeeGo Netbook

Lenovo It hasn't been exactly smooth sailing for MeeGo, Intel's Linux-based operating system that was developed to go up against offerings from Google and Apple. But there have been signs of life here at Computex 2011, beginning with Asus's launch of the EeePC X101. And now there's the Lenovo Ideapad S100, which was spotted in the wild running a version of MeeGo that's actually usable. Let's take a closer look.

The Ideapad S100 looks like your average netbook from the outside: Its black plastic construction is topped off with a bit of texture that does an exceptional job warding off finger prints and smudge marks. Obviously, black doesn't grab the attention quite as well as the multiple color offerings available on the EeePC X101, but it's a well-designed netbook nonetheless.

The tiled keyboard is full size and arguably the S100's best asset, as the keys are slightly scalloped and elevated to an ideal height. The clickpad, with its mouse buttons integrated into the touchpad, is roomy and clicks with ease. I didn't experience any weird cursor movements or miltitouch gestures kicking in when they shouldn't.

The MeeGo experience is the main attraction here, and this particular skin is very similar to the one found in the EeePC X101. Everything is laid out in "Panels". For instance, a "People" panel gives you access to social networks and chat-clients like Facebook, AIM, Twitter, and Flickr. There's a "Status" panel that all these social networks feed into. The "Internet" panel makes use of the Chromium browser to surf the internet, and there's a "Media" panel that handles all your photos and videos. For the most part, working with all these panels was smooth and very pleasant. None of them crashed or took a tremendously long time to load or respond. The Wi-Fi signal was very spotty in the convention center, so I couldn't get the browser to load any of my favorite websites.

What I did get to work (but couldn't on the EeePC X101) is Intel's AppUP store, which is intended to go up against Google's Marketplace and Apple's App store. The selection of paid and free apps isn't worth writing home about, but it's a start.

The S100 comes with the usual netbook features that include three USB ports, Ethernet, and VGA (the X101 doesn't have VGA and Ethernet). It runs on an Intel Atom N455 processor and 1GB of memory.
Lenovo hasn't officially announced that a MeeGo-running Ideapad S100 is U.S. bound, but if the pricing in mind is anywhere near Asus's ballpark (less than $200), there might be some potential here.

Google, Microsoft - The Apple’s iPad Supremacy Challenged

Google Inc and Microsoft Corp will challenge the supremacy of Apple’s iPad as new tablet models are announced in Taipe’s Computex trade show this week. Google’s Android OS and Microsoft’s new Windows platform will be observed by investors and analyze if they are any match to Apple’s iPad. KGI Securities Co’s analyst Angela Hsiang said investors will want to know which tablet is better in performance and price and when the non-iPad camp will get going. She said, previously, people couldn’t actually see the products but at Computex, they can touch and use the products.

In 2007-2008 Computex, Acer Inc and Asustek Computer Inc stirred the market with their low-cost netbooks. This week, they will showcase features of Google’s Android. Executives from Google and Microsoft will be at the event to give updates. Qualcomm Inc and Nvidia Corp, users of chips and chip designs from Intel Corp and Dell inspiron 1520 battery Dell inspiron 6000 battery ARM Holdings Plc will also have their products compete. In a May 26 report, analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, said by 2015 tablets shipments worldwide will reach 215 million units. PC sales will be reduced by 15% by tablets and annual sales between 2010 and 2015 will be less 2%. According to iSuppli Corp, new competitors will cut Apple’s market share by 50% in 2012.

A sample of Microsoft’s tablet OS based on ARM chips will be featured, said 3 insiders. Microsoft’s current platform, Windows 7, uses Samsung and Motorola tablets which are not ARM chip compatible. This month, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said machines based on a new Microsoft OS, dubbed Windows 8, are due for release next year but retracted the “misstatement” later. Hsiang said future’s big development is ARM plus Microsoft, and if that’s a success then it’ll be big for the market. Windows 8 will also impact the market because many people can’t get used to Android while they’re familiar with Windows, added Hsiang.

ARM president Tudor Brown said ARM technology which supports the iPad and iPhone, looks at getting 50% of tablets, notebooks and netbook chips market share by 2015. They expect a climb of 15% by the end of 2011. The strong early lead in tablets and the smartphone market of Google supported its applications store expansion. That success, said IDC analyst Helen Chiang, balances Google’s software development immaturity. She said most vendors still worry about quality and stability and choose Google because its cost is lower as the operating system is free, while Windows adds to the price.

Top six tablets review | www.batterylaptoppower.com

Samsung's Galaxy Tab II aims to take on the iPad

Apple iPad 2
Pre-eminent and still the best tablet currently on the market, the iPad 2 is light, slim and a delight to use. But it’s not just the fact that you can read books, check your emails, browse the webs or watch videos that mean Apple, for now, own this market: the iPad has spawned a library of Apps that is continuing to grow rapidly and that has changed how many consumers think of media.
That means that there are countless, excellent games as well as apps that reinvent magazines and serve purposes that were impossible on other devices. Even cab drivers collecting passengers at airports are using iPads Dell xps m1530 battery Dell vostro 1520 battery for the name of the person they’re picking up.
Asus Transformer
Asus’s Transformer is a departure for tablets: it combines an excellent Google Android tablet with a fully-fledged keyboard. The result is both a decent netbook and tablet that does everything an Android tablet currently can. That means web browsing, movies, a range of apps and scores of other uses are all possible, but so too is the longer-form work that demands a keyboard.
The Tranformer may not be the lightest or the most elegant of the forthcoming Android tablets, but it is certainly the first to really tackle the problems of typing on a touchscreen. An added bonus is that they keyboard effectively acts as a battery pack for the tablet and so can extend life to up to 16 hours.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

The Galaxy Tab 2 is the only Android tablet to rival the iPad 2 for style. It’s light, slim, powerful and elegant. At 10.1”, the screen is big enough while the surprisingly light weight means it’s genuinely portable too. The only real downside is that the Tab 2 isn’t out yet. Using one extensively before release, however, indicates that at launch it will only be the availability of apps and the ease of use that differentiates the Tab 2 from the iPad.

That’s a double-edged compliment, however: the Tab 2 Dell inspiron 6400 battery Hp pavilion dv7 battery has a single dock port, rather than any bells and whistles that might let you connect HDMI cables etc. In due course, however, wireless technologies may render that complaint irrelevant.

Motorola Xoom

Motorola’s Xoom, in both the US and the UK, was the first tablet to come to the market using Google’s Android operating system. It remains an impressive device: a decent 10” screen, a powerful processor and the real faults at launch were simply down to the lack of apps for Honeycomb, the codename for the tablet version of Android.

Although critics suggested that the placing of the on button on the back, for instance, was a design flaw, in fact it was simply different from the iPad: the Xoom remains a viable alternative because most users of tablets will be focused on web browsing, email and ereading. With that in mind, it’s as good an Android tablet as is currently available in the UK.

Acer Iconia

Available in both 7” and 10” versions, the Acer Acer as07b41 battery  Acer aspire 5520 battery Iconia is a reasonably priced (from £299) device that surpasses expectations. It has more ports and consequently can do more than most of its counterparts, and it’s also nicely put together. A Windows version is also available, making it plain that tablets really need to have proper tablet interfaces such as Honeycomb to be effective.

What the Iconia really reveals, however, is how different a 7” and a 10” tablet is: one device feels like there’s enough space for browsing the web and watching films in relative luxury. The other, however, is far better suited for portability. That means consumers should decide what’s most important to them and buy accordingly, rather than simply going for the 7” because it’s cheaper.

HTC Flyer

The HTC Flyer is one of a very few tablets that is distinctly different: featuring a pen, it might feel like this is a technological instalment of Back to the Future, but in fact the ‘stylus’ is used to write on the 7” device and take handwritten notes in a way that has genuinely not been easy before. Integration with Evernote and other applications means that it could replace a notepad and also record audio too.
Aside from the pen, the Flyer also offers a version of HTC Sense, the company’s own interface, that runs over an older version of Android. The result is a tablet that’s genuinely very different from the others, although not necessarily a rival to larger models.

Windows Phone 7 smartphones - HTC HD7S Video First Review: 4.3" Windows Phone 7 on AT&T

ATT is no stranger to Windows Phone 7 smartphones. Among US carriers, they offer the broadest selection with 3 models, the Samsung , HTC Surround and LG Quantum. Make that 4 models on June 5 when the HTC HD7S comes out. This is a tweaked an improved version of the HD7 that launched with T-Mobile and overseas carrier. While the HD7 had an old-fashioned basic LCD that looks washed out by today's standards, the HD7S boasts a thoroughly modern Super LCD. It has better color saturation, wider viewing angles and looks as good as its Android cousin, the HTC EVO 4G.

The camera is improved too, with quicker focus and snaps, our other complaint about the original model. Everything else we loved is still here: a super-sized 4.3", 800 x 480 capacitive display, an elegant and extremely slim design, excellent materials with metal and soft touch finishes and a metal kickstand that turns the HD7S into a tabletop Dell inspiron 1520 battery dell vostro 1500 battery video player.

The HD7S is a 3G HSDPA phone that runs Windows Phone 7 with the NoDo update that has copy and paste and an improved Marketplace search among other things. Like all Windows 7 phones, it will eligible for the Mango OS update that brings 500 new features including multi-tasking this fall. The phone has WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth and a GPS that works with Bing Maps and Navigator.

Windows Phone 7 may not be selling like hotcakes yet, but we still love the elegant and simple Metro UI. The phone is as friendly and easy to use as the iPhone, and in fact mimics some iOS features such as USB syncing of music using the Zune desktop app (or Windows Phone Connector that hooks you up with your iTunes library on a Mac), and a heavily vetted Marketplace. It also supports DRM and that means not just Zune videos but the ever-popular Netflix.

Technology news - Android adds Will Coming to Windows

Forget Google's android emulator: a startup company has created an Android runtime environment for Windows.

Ars Technica reports that startup company BlueStacks is currently working on a native x86 Android runtime that will enable Android apps to run within Windows without the need for an emulator. The technology has reportedly impressed potential investors to the point that they have now dumped $7.6 million in Series A funding into the project so that the team can turn its software into a full-blown business.

Right now Android developers are forced to run Google's emulator supplied in the Android SDK so that their apps can function within the Windows environment. This isn't exactly the ideal situation, as apps can lag to the point of sheer annoyance on some systems. BlueStacks' supposedly bypasses this translation method, allowing near-native performance on the non-native x86 platform.

According to the report, the BlueStacks runtime will allow Android programs to launch from a desktop shortcut like any other Windows-based program, and run in individual windows – no reboot required. There will also be an option to run a complete, full-blown Android environment on Windows as well, including the launcher and other elements. Third-party applications won't have to be recompiled for x86, and users can even install conventional Android software from Amazon's Android Appstore and run it on Windows too.

"BlueStacks helps PC manufacturers to ride the Android momentum by enabling Android apps on x86-based tablets, netbooks, notebooks Dell vostro 1520 battery hp dv6000 battery  , convertibles and AiO Windows PCs," the company said. "With the new hybrid convertible form factors, BlueStacks completely eliminates the need to carry two devices. The end consumer benefits from getting both Android and Windows at the price of a single PC. "

The company also states that its Android stack will integrate "seamlessly" with Citrix and Microsoft software delivery infrastructure and with Citrix’s Enterprise App Store. "With BlueStacks, enterprise IT can deliver Android apps securely and effortlessly to any end point running Windows," BlueStacks said.

The tech made its first public demonstration this week at the Citrix Synergy conference. BlueStacks is currently establishing connections with hardware manufacturers that are interested in shipping the x86 Android runtime on consumer devices. Its first set of hardware partners and OEM customers are expected to be announced in the next few weeks, and there may even be samples shown at Computex 2011 next week.

App's News - The iPad of Publishing Will come to Indies in the future

From a mainstream publishing perspective, the jury is still very much out on tablet, and specifically iPad magazines. Some publishers argue that they are expensive, time-consuming and only reach a limited audience.
However, I also think that the reasons for producing them are becoming more compelling as each day passes. They can save huge costs for publishers on paper and distribution (especially customer publishing companies) and they enable publishers to rebrand, reposition or even start new media publications. Distribution is also less of an issue as sales of tablet PCs continue to rocket.

For the indie sector, they offer huge possibilities, which is why two companies that I have been involved with, Sutro Digital and Anorak Publishing are taking tablet magazines very seriously indeed. So why should smaller publishers be looking at the iPad Dell latitude e6500 battery Dell latitude d531 battery ? Here’s my take…

1. Branding

It is very simple to create a blog and get posting. Anyone can do it. Sustaining it, as anyone who have ever tried commercial blogging will tell you, is much more tricky (but that’s another matter)...

For the time being, there is still a barrier to entry to producing iPad magazines. Firstly, there are additional costs involved. Secondly, some design skills are required. And,  thirdly, if you are going the whole hog and creating an app, you need Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to approve what you are doing.

More related business you maybe like :

There is still an odd kind of prestige that industry people, and indeed readers, place on magazines. Readers have chosen a brand to read, may have invested money to buy it or time downloading it and will inevitably spend more time reading and interacting with it than they probably would a website. Ironically, in an era of reader-curated apps like Flipboard, Paper.li and many others, many people still like the concept of a magazine which someone else has edited.

So in theory producing a magazine can make smaller publishers look a little more grown up and this might give them an advantage over web only brands in the way they are perceived by the industry and by advertisers.

2 Reinventing publishing

Some mainstream publishers have tried to shoehorn their existing publications on the iPad. It is clear that some things that work in weekly and monthly magazines look very odd in tablet versions. Also, while I can’t blame companies like Conde Nast for reproducing all the ads they have in their print editions on the iPad, it is highly annoying clicking through ads after ad before you get to the content.

Tablets offer publishers the opportunity to reinvent the magazine. Not just in ways that add interactive features and embedded video content, but also in the type of content in the magazine, the number of pages, the way issues are themed or features are connected and whole lot more.

Similarly, they might give smaller publishers new commercial models, too. How much more palatable would sponsorship of a publication be for the Motorola GP140 battery  Symbol MC9060 battery readers (with maybe a few pages of advertorial, as well as advertising) than endless page adverts? The level of engagement for the brand that sponsors a title would be much higher and, in many, ways akin to how brand sponsor TV programmes.

3. The costs are coming down

There are three main costs in producing a tablet magazine - editorial, design and technology. Designing pages is a skill that many bloggers and indie publishers need to buy in and it can work out very dear.

Meanwhile, the technology required to actually prepare a magazine for launch on the iPad used to be very expensive. What has happened in the last six months is that there are now significantly cheaper tech solutions, which also mean publishers can cut design costs too.

Publishers can get their titles on the iPad for nothing using Magcloud. A start-up from HP (NYSE: HPQ), Magcloud enables companies to publish PDF versions of their titles in three ways…
As straight PDFs that anyone can download to PCs and smartphones (this is similar to rival services like Scribd).

As a print on demand edition in which the publisher sets the price and has an option of making a small profit from each sale.

The PDF versions are available as direct download to the iPad via the Magcloud store. Sure they lack interactive features but the content really does look good. I recently chose this route to launch the first issue of Who Ate all the Pies hp nc6400 battery  Dell xps m1330 battery , a magazine from the team behind one of the UK’s most popular football blogs.

Ultimately, though, the key ticket for many small publishers is to have their own app so that the magazine is available via the Apple app store. This then enables the content creators to add interactive features and video content, as well as potentially chase some of those innovative ads that have been specially created for the Apple tablet. There are, of course≤ issues around who owns data lists which are currently giving mainstream publishers very real headaches. I think this is less of an issue for indie publishers.

Sutro Digital has been working with a company called Alligator Digital Magazines to launch its first iPad magazine Technode. A 40-page publication, it focuses on the way that gadgets are changing our lives and includes features on Augmented Reality, 4G mobile and how social networking is changing political protests. It is available for free download from the app store now or as a PDF from Magcloud.

Alligator Digital Magazines, who have also published the excellent Tablazines titles which were among the first dedicated iPad compaq nc6400 battery Compaq nc4400 battery  titles from within the indie sector. The price to create the app is now at a level that small publishers can afford. Also Alligator works with the publisher to create templates which will ultimately in the long run save on design costs.

Alligator is by no meas the only player in town. Yudu has a very good offering too. I am also keeping a very close eye on a German start up called Aside which has developed what it is claiming is the first magazine to be built completely in HTML5. The big deal for small publishers is that it means they can create a magazine that is fully interactive and works on a number of platforms without the need for an app.

I think the next few years could be fascinating for publishing. I don’t think we are back in 2
005 when a host of new media brands (Huffington Post, Gawker etc) were able to spring up and steam a march on existing media companies. Innovative companies like Future (who have already posted some impressive iPad-driven digital figures) and Dennis have already recognised that tablet editions will be a huge part of their business and have been creating some superb content.

I do though think we will remember 2011 and 2012 as a time when publishing got a real shake up and savvy indie publishers played a key role in reinventing digital magazines.

Be carefull ! Security flaw found in Android phones

A significant security hole has been discovered in Google’s Android operating system for smartphones that can allow attackers to gain access to users’ personal information without their permission.

The flaw, which was discovered by three research assistants at Ulm University in the southern part of Germany, affects approximately 97 percent of Android Motorola GP140 battery Symbol MC9060 battery
 users.

In a recent blog post, the researchers found users of Android devices running versions 2.3.3 and below could be susceptible to attack when connected to unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. Anyone else on that network could gain access to, modify or delete Android users’ calendars, photos and contacts.

“It is quite easy,” the researchers wrote in a blog post. “The implications of this vulnerability reach from disclosure to loss of personal information.”

A spokesman for Google said the company is aware of the issue, and a fix is already in place for the calendar and contacts applications in the latest versions of Android, code-named “Gingerbread” and “Honeycomb.” A solution is also in the works for Google’s Picasa photo sharing service, he said.

More related business you maybe like :

Only about 3 percent of Android users have the latest versions of the operating system, but Google said Android users running older versions will get a fix “in the next few days.” Users don’t need to take any action, and the patch will roll out globally.

The security flaw stems from Google making use of unencrypted login protocol for the affected services. By using HTTP, rather than the more secure HTTPS, “an adversary can easily sniff the (login information),” according to the blog post.

The kind of attack that can be performed on Android devices over unencrypted Wi-Fi networks is similar to so-called “Sidejacking” attacks on Facebook or Twitter. For instance, Firesheep, a free Firefox extension that collects data broadcast over an unprotected Wi-Fi network, allows users to gain access to other people’s Facebook accounts.

Though the researchers found that any unsecured application making use of an Android user’s photos, contacts or calendars could be compromised, the data an attacker can gain access to is limited to those three groups. The security bug does not, for example, allow intruders to view a user’s e-mails.

Google was able to fix the problem on its end by requiring an HTTPS connection for calendar and contacts synchronization. By solving the problem on its own servers, Google was able to get around a notoriously slow Android Hp probook 4710s battery Hp 484170-001 Battery update process: after Google updates the code, manufacturing partners and carriers then manipulate the code for each device.

As a result, the vast majority of Android users are still running “Froyo,” which launched in May 2010. A quarter of users are still on “Eclair,” which came out all the way back in January of last year.

That means a patch for the security hole could have been months or years away for many Android users had Google not found a workaround.

In addition to switching to HTTPS, the researchers also suggested Google prevent Android devices from automatically remembering and logging onto unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. Google did not say whether it had taken any of those steps.

Apple's next iPhone - iPhone 5 Will coming on Sept?

While industry observers have chimed in over the past weeks about what will be inside Apple's next iPhone 5, one analyst on Friday gave insight into when the phone will actually hit shelves.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster told clients Apple will introduce its next iPhone in September, rather than the usual summer introduction, as has been rumored.

Jaffray offered two "concrete data points" for the projection.

One iPhone Symbol MC9060 battery Dell gk479 battery equipment supplier he spoke to indicated that they had received orders for the equipment "several months later than usual." The delay in parts suggests the final phone would also be delayed.

Secondly, the company has usually had a software event in the spring, followed by a hardware announcement at its summer developer conference. "

"There have been, on average, 79 days between the software event and the iPhone hardware announcement," he said.

But it appears the summer conference, the Worldwide Developer Conference, is a focus on software, suggesting that a hardware unveiling is coming later on, in the fall.

Anticipation has been mounting for the new iPhone since the 4th generation was rolled out in June of 2010. While widely regarded as cutting edge at its introduction, competitors like Samsung and HTC have surpassed the iPhone 4 in terms of hardware specs.

Industry insiders have chimed in on what will be in Apple's next iPhone 5, but the consensus that the next phone will be a "super phone" is diminishing.

Apple's next iPhone Symbol 21-61261-01 battery Dell xps m1330 battery will be "evolutionary not revolutionary," with perhaps a better camera and a different casing, but no 4G, or LTE, wireless modem, according to BMO Capital's Keith Bachman.

Writing to clients, Bachman explained that poor battery performance for LTE is "one of the reasons why we think Apple's LTE phone will come in 2012".

The sentiment was echoed from other industry watchers just last week from Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek. Instead, it will be an upgraded iPhone 4, most notably with a faster processor and some updated specs.

"According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support," he writes in a research note.
The A5 processor is the same chip that Apple rolled out to power its iPad 2. As for LTE, he says the Qualcomm LTE chipset Apple would have used "is currently not achieving yields sufficient for inclusion in the iPhone 5."

He says Apple had hoped to have the LTE chipsets ready, but was planning a version without LTE called iPhone 4S.

If true, the roll-out would match Apple precedent.

In 2008, Apple introduced the iPhone Dell vostro 1520 battery Hp pavilion dv6000 battery 3G and in 2009 introduced the iPhone 3GS -- the "S" standing for speed. For the most part, the 3GS was the same as the 3G, except it had a faster processor.

The move is sure to upset fans waiting for faster network connections and may complicate Apple's rumored iCloud service.

Regardless of when it does come out, it is almost sure to be a success, according to some industry watchers.
Caris & Co's Robert Cihra told clients last month that  to focus solely on the the hardware and the launch date would be "missing the point" as Apple is no longer a "hit product company," driven by timing.

"It's not the hardware that matters," Cihra wrote, "...actually, it's the software+hardware+services in a fully-integrated vertical platform. As we've said repeatedly, iOS IS the 'what's next?' for Apple."

With cloud-based functionality integrated into the next iOS, promising newer services like digital lockers and access to unbridled computing power, the prospects for the next iPhone look bright, even if the timing is uncertain.

iPhone 5 slated for Sept. release: analyst

Following the typical pattern of Apple, we would have expected the iPhone 5 to come in the summer, but there has been plenty of talk of delay -- arising mainly from issues with suppliers. If it were to be unveiled in summer originally, then Apple indeed delayed the roll-out, shutting the door to any speculation as it announced that the focus of this summer's Worldwide Developers conference would be the iOS and Mac OS -- not hardware. And there is apparent consensus that iPhone 5 may not be launched in June as was expected generally.

Jefferies & Co.’s Peter Misek wrote that Apple is taking longer than expected to incorporate new "cloud"-based features into iOS, things that represent "a significant step forward" for the operating system, according to Jefferies & Co.’s Peter Misek. "As a result, there will be an iPhone 5 introduction “in September/October," Misek told clients.

Apple MacBook , "Apple's growth in Macs has quadrupled since they shifted to Intel

Intel CEO Paul Otellini insists Apple isn't going to be ditching x86 processors for RISC-based chips in its MacBook lineup "any time soon."

"Apple's Dell studio 1555 battery growth in Macs has quadrupled since they shifted to Intel. Their market share has quadrupled since they shifted [from PowerPC] to Intel," Otellini said earlier this week during a company conference.

"And that value proposition has served them very well. [As such], I don't see their Mac line moving in any different direction any time soon."

However, Tom Kilroy, a senior VP at Intel, refused to specifically confirm whether Santa Clara had been guaranteed a place in future MacBooks, telling Reuters on Wednesday such an announcement would be up to Cupertino.

Still, Kilroy did claim that ARM chips simply aren't up to the task of powering Apple's next-gen MacBooks.

"Go look at the performance of those platforms... They're taking our latest and high-end end versions of second-generation core, and ARM doesn't even come close to any capability there."

Unsurprisingly, a number of analysts and journalists continue to disagree with Intel's assessment.
"Apple likes vertical integration, has proven ability to migrate software among instruction sets, and can derive adequate performance from non-Intel CPUs," Linley Group analyst Joseph Byrne told CNET.

"Thus, I think it's only a matter of time before we see Apple computers with keyboards using ARM CPUs."

SemiAccurate's Charlie Demerjian expressed similar sentiments in a report earlier this month, claiming Apple had already decided to adopt RISC-powered chips for its future MacBook laptops.
"x86 is history on Apple laptops Symbol MC9060 battery Dewalt DW9057 battery , or will be in 2-3 years. In any case, it is a done deal, Intel is out, and Apple chips are in. The only question left is if they will use their own core, a Samsung core, or the generic ARM black box.

"My bet is on generic for the first round, with a custom uncore, and moving to progressively more proprietary features with each successive generation."

But prominent Silicon Valley analyst David Kanter remains unconvinced.

"Rumors aside, Apple will not switch their laptops to ARM any time soon. In the past, Apple successfully made two platform transitions, when their hardware partners had no performance competitive designs," Kanter told TG Daily in an e-mailed statement on May 10th.

"x86 has no problem keeping up with the market in terms of performance or efficiency, and there are too many technical and business challenges for an ARM migration."

New Report : In Europe - Apple and Android phones face tighter laws

Apple smartphones and those running on Google’s Android system look set to come under tighter regulation in Europe, after an EU data protection advisory panel ruled on Wednesday that location information collected by the devices should be classed as personal data.

This is likely to mean strict limits on how location data can be collected and stored by smartphone hp nc6400 battery  Dell xps m1530 battery companies, telecoms operators and any businesses hoping to run location-related services on phones.

Apple is already facing questions in the US, Germany and South Korea over its collection of data that tracked the rough location of iPhone users. The company has blamed this on a software flaw.

Researchers in Germany also found this week that the vast majority of Android handsets could be leaking data to hackers, and warned users to avoid using the devices on public WiFi networks. Ulm University research found that it was “quite easy” for hackers to intercept data from Google’s photo-sharing, calendar and contacts applications. Other Google services such as Gmail were also potentially vulnerable.

Google said on Wednesday it was rolling out a fix to address the security flaw.

The recent security breaches add urgency to Wednesday’s recommendations by the Article 29 Working Party, a panel of European data protection officials that advises the European Commission. The proposals are a first step to formulating a law on mobile phone location data, and could be written into Europe’s revised Data Protection Directive this year.

The working group said: “Since smartphones Symbol 21-65587-01 battery hp 484170-001 battery and tablet computers are inextricably linked to their owner, the movement patterns of the devices provide a very intimate insight into the private life of the owners. One of the great risks is that the owners are unaware they transmit their location, and to whom.”

The panel said companies should get permission from smartphone users before collecting geographic information and should specify what purpose the data are being used for. Location services must be switched off as a default.
Eduardo Ustaran, lawyer at Field Fisher Waterhouse, said that the advisory group’s strict view could hold back the industry. “If you are always relying on consent before people can access these technologies, it could have a damaging effect on new development.”

Many companies have been looking at using location data to send targeted advertising to smartphone users, but could now find it more difficult to so.

Eric Schmidt, Google chairman, said the company would be very careful about the use of location data on phones.

“Your phone typically knows where it is. It has to for emergency services. The question is what can you do with that information. We are very careful about that, but that is a new issue for society. My guess that is going to be pretty regulated, particularly in Europe.”

Here is Method That You Buy for Your Verizon iPhone 4

Fortunately, we're here to help make that decision a little bit easier. Since the iPhone 4 became available to Verizon subscribers in February, we've been testing cases designed to fit the newest member of the iPhone 4 family. And we've put together a chart of cases that fit the Verizon iPhone Compaq nc6400 battery hp nc8430 battery , separating the top choices for the also-rans.

But first, let's review the reasons why you might need a case and why Verizon iPhone owners need to be extra careful when picking out an accessory that fits their phone.

Why You Need a Case: It's a simple rule of physics--anything that can fit in the palm of your hand can also fall out of the palm of your hand and onto some rather unforgiving surfaces below. While the iPhone is certainly durable enough to survive many tumbles, a case can add an extra layer of insurance against cracks, dings, and other damage.

You should also consider the fact that the iPhone 4 Dell latitude d531 battery Dell vostro 1510 battery  introduces a new design to Apple's smartphone, one that incorporates aluminosilicate glass on the back of the phone in addition to the glass touchscreen. That was expected to make the iPhone 4 less susceptible to damage, but some contend that hasn't panned out. At any rate, swaddling your iPhone in a case that wraps around its back and sides seems like a good bet for preventing unwanted wear and tear.

Finally, we don't want to wake the ghosts of Antennagate--last summer's controversy over iPhone 4 reception--but there's a reason Apple offered free cases to users complaining about iPhone 4 signal strength. Wrapping a phone--any phone--in a case can stave off some of the signal attenuation issues that brought Apple unwanted publicity after the iPhone 4 launch--and can make you a more satisfied iPhone 4 customer.

Why Verizon iPhone Owners Should Be Careful: If you've bought an iPhone 4 for Verizon's wireless network, there's another wrinkle--your phone isn't exactly like the one that works with AT&T's network. And that means not every case will fit your phone.

As we noted back in January, Verizon's iPhone uses a slightly different antenna design that repositions the gaps between the antennas that ring the outer edge of the phone. In turn, the ring/silent switch has shifted ever so slightly. As a result, a case that perfectly fits an iPhone 4 for AT&T's GSM-based network may not be so ideal for a model designed to run on Verizon's CDMA network. Conversely, cases with ample openings for buttons, switches, and ports will fit both types of iPhone 4 just fine.

In the case reviews included in our chart, we tested both AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4s for compatibility. And our reviews indicate how each phone fits each case.

What Case Should You Get: Our chart of Verizon iPhone 4 cases debuts with 11 entries, some of which will also fit AT&T's version of the iPhone 4 just as nicely. We'll certainly add more cases to the chart as they arrive for testing.

OriginalRight now, our two top-rated Verizon iPhone 4 cases take very different approaches to keeping your smartphone safe and sound. iFrogz's Luxe Original is a hardshell case that comes in two parts that fit securely around the iPhone 4 (the Verizon model as well as AT&T's offering). The Luxe Original features a secure locking system and many different color combinations to put your own personalized spin on protection. (Note that another hardshell case--the Proof Duo features a similar snap-into-place approach and also fared well in our ratings.)
CaseOur other top-rated case is the Egg iPhone 4 case from Case-Mate. It's a silicone wrap that encases your Verizon (or AT&T) iPhone 4; it stand out thanks to a bumpy back surface aimed at providing shock resistance should you drop your phone. The molded dots that make up those bumps also let you keep a tight grip on your iPhone 4.

Google News - Google App Engine goes for Go language

Go, Google's experimental programming language, is coming to the company's App Engine cloud-computing service--and a bit closer to reality in the process.

Google hopes to use Go to tackle modern programming challenges such as getting useful work out of chips with multiple processor cores. Getting new languages to catch on is difficult, though--it took Sun Microsystems years with Java, and its Fortress never really caught on widely.

But incorporating Go into App Engine could help make it more relevant, or at least easier to test out, by reducing the hassles involved in trying it. App Engine Hp pavilion dv6000 battery Acer aspire 4315 battery is a service for running software on Google's infrastructure--a higher-level foundation than the nuts and bolts Amazon Web Services provides, but a lower level than full-fledged applications such as Google Docs.

The company announced the Go move last week at the Google I/O show and released a new Go software development kit (SDK) to let programmers try it out. So far, though, the SDK is as far as the average person can get, because Google hasn't publicly released the service.

"You don't even need to have Go installed beforehand because the SDK is fully self-contained. Just download the SDK, unzip it, and start coding," said Go team members David Symonds, Nigel Tao, and Andrew Gerrand on the Go blog. "We will soon enable deployment of Go apps into the App Engine hosting infrastructure...Once full deployment is enabled, it'll be easy to push your app to Google's cloud."

App Engine started with the ability to run software dell inspiron 1720 battery Dell inspiron 1525 battery written in Python, a popular language within Google. Second came Java, which is widely used to run server software. Go, while not the fixture of mainstream computing the first two languages are, has attracted a very active programming community. The language is an open-source software project.

Go on App Engine can handle the full go language and, when programs run, they can tap into most of the standard suite of libraries of pre-built tools that come with Go. In addition, Go is adapted for several App Engine features designed to let applications run at large scale, such as the Datastore interface for storing information in a database.
However, some elements of Go are missing for now--including one part of the Go sales pitch, the ability to spread jobs more easily across multiple threads that run in parallel.

"Although goroutines and channels are present, when a Go app runs on App Engine only one thread is run in a given instance," the Go team members said. "That is, all goroutines run in a single operating system thread, so there is no CPU parallelism available for a given client request. We expect this restriction will be lifted at some point."

Even in its preliminary form, Go should appeal to some coders, said
"It's...an interesting new option for App Engine because Go apps will be compiled to native code, making Go a good choice for more CPU-intensive tasks," said Google's Scott Knaster in a Google Code blog post. "Plus, the garbage collection and concurrency features of the language, combined with excellent libraries, make it a great fit for Web apps."

Facebook and Google - Facebook's Anti-Google Fiasco

Facebook was caught red-handed last week being socially unfriendly to Google, its Silicon Valley competitor. It hired a public relations firm to plant negative stories about Google's privacy policies, and then it tried to hide its involvement in the whisper campaign. This is ironic, considering that Facebook is all about getting people to disclose everything about themselves.

This episode could be chalked up to corporate clumsiness, except that, in beating up on Google, Facebook was encouraging the same federal regulators it tries to keep away from its own business. Facebook needs to be more careful in choosing its friends and enemies.

Facebook and Google have been sparring for months over what level of access to information about their respective consumers each would allow the other. Some 600 million people give Facebook personal details about themselves in exchange for the ability to communicate instantly with relatives, friends and colleagues. Google, meanwhile, is trying to build a competitive social-media service to add to its core of search advertising.
Last year, Google began to block Facebook dell latitude d820 battery Dell inspiron 640m battery users from automatically populating their lists of online friends with the contacts in their Google Gmail address books. Facebook then told its users how to do this manually. Google responded by upgrading a service it launched in 2009 called Social Circle, which lets Gmail users find contacts on Facebook and other services.

crovitz0516

Facebook next hired Burson-Marsteller to pitch stories on how Google is violating people's privacy through Social Circle. But the journalists and privacy commentators the PR firm contacted concluded that Google has done nothing wrong: If people freely provide information online, this information can be used by Google in the same way Google News is free to link to news articles that publishers make available for the taking.

Privacy expert Christopher Soghoian made public the emails he received from Burson-Marsteller soliciting an article criticizing Google. The emails, which he shared on a site called Pastebin, make for cringing reading. The pitch cites a recent agreement between Google and the Federal Trade Commission over unrelated privacy practices. "The FTC made it clear last month that Google had agreed to change its ways, and in so doing, the U.S. government gave Google Dell inspiron 1526 battery sony vgp-bps8a battery an imprimatur of credibility and trust amongst the American people," the PR email reads. "In light of the recent agreement between the government and Google, Congress and the FTC must immediately investigate this latest violation of online privacy."

The pitch not only was misleading but invited similar scrutiny of Facebook, the No. 1 target of privacy regulators. It's as if General Motors called for tougher regulation of Ford without stopping to think that any new rules would also apply to it. The situation was made worse when Burson-Marsteller threw its client under the bus, saying it had violated its own policies by agreeing to Facebook's request that it not disclose its client. Facebook, which urges its users to disclose all, was caught trying to remain anonymous. It admitted, "The issues are serious, and we should have presented them in a serious and transparent way."

Facebook doesn't need to hire a PR firm or run to the FTC. It can simply inform its users of any privacy concerns. Competitive markets will take care of the rest. Pressure from consumers in 2007 forced Facebook to drop its privacy-abusing Beacon advertising system. A year later, Google was forced by popular demand to increase privacy protections on its Chrome browser.

At the end of the day, this dispute is about advertising dollars more than about privacy. Google wants a piece of Facebook's $2 billion in annual advertising revenues, hoping to build a similar social media network to boost its $29 billion in annual revenues.

The dispute is also a reminder that free services such as Facebook and Google come with a price. Consumers need to keep a truism in mind: If you're not paying for the product, then you're not the customer—you're the product being sold. Social media services such as Facebook take advantage of data that consumers disclose about themselves to enable advertisers to deliver ever more targeted marketing to them.

The benefits of social media are redefining people's expectation of privacy. The trade-offs of privacy versus communication are fluid and change faster than regulators can keep up. That's why it would be a mistake for Congress to pass any of the proposed new laws setting privacy expectations into stone.

Silicon Valley companies should resist as long as they can the regulatory capture that deadened innovation in industries from steel to autos. Lobbying for regulation instead of competing for consumers is a sign of an industry in decline. If Silicon Valley firms open the way for Washington to settle the competition among them, they shouldn't be surprised if politicians are only too happy to oblige.

Google Chrome - Web app development never looked more promising

The Web isn't just for lightweight applications anymore, developers of games and other processor-intensive programs are starting to consider it as a viable alternative platform.

Until recently, the Web was a second-class platform when it came to computationally demanding applications. At the Google I/O developer conference this week, it became apparent that's no longer the case.
While Web applications haven't quite achieved parity with native desktop and mobile applications, they're close enough for Acer aspire 5520 battery Acer aspire 6935g battery developers of games and other processor-intensive programs to look at the Web as a viable alternative platform.

Google VP of Chrome Sundar Pichai said during Wednesday's keynote presentation that a Web game written today to take advantage of the GPU acceleration support that has been added to Google's Chrome browser will run about 100 times faster than it would have had it been written six months ago using the Canvas API.
Proof that Web technology has progressed to this point came from game publisher Rovio Mobile, which announced the availability of its enormously popular Angry Birds game in Google's Chrome Web Store.
"We are bringing Angry Birds to the biggest platform out there, the Web," declared Peter Vesterbacka, CEO of Rovio Mobile.

Angry Birds is far from the most processor-intensive game on the market, but its presence in the Chrome Web Store represents a vote of Dell inspiron 1440 battery Dell inspiron 1000 battery confidence and is likely to encourage commercial developers to consider Web apps for projects previously deemed too taxing for browsers.

Ian Ellison-Taylor, director of Google's Web platform development, offered encouragement along these lines in his review of Chrome's performance metrics. "The progress on JavaScript has been truly phenomenal," he said. "It has fundamentally changed the kinds of applications you can create on the Web."

As an example, Ellison-Taylor demonstrated Tinkercad.com, a Web-based computer-aided design (CAD) app. Until recently, CAD apps haven't been possible in the browser; Web technology just wasn't fast enough. Now, with WebGL and hardware acceleration, that's no longer the case. This is true not only for Chrome, but also for other browsers.

In addition to improving Chrome's graphics performance, Google has improved the financial performance opportunities for Web developers: Vikas Gupta, product manager for Google's payments team, said that Google is now asking for only a 5% cut of revenue from Web apps sold through the Chrome Web Store. That's 25 percentage points less than what developers pay Apple when they make a sale in the iTunes App Store.
Web app development never looked more promising.

a huge battle between the titans of mobile devices - Android Sets Stage for Smartphone Battle Royal

Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Apple iOS5. Windows Phone Mango. Aside from the edible nomenclature, they've got one thing in common: They're all coming later this year, setting up a huge battle between the titans of mobile devices.

Google's Android ambitions

Google announced Ice Cream Sandwich, an upcoming version of the Android operating system, at its Google I/O conference Tuesday. This is Google's big plan to get all of its mobile devices on the same page -- a modular operating system that accommodates phones dell inspiron 1720 battery dell latitude d620 battery and tablets of all sizes.

As such, some of the features found in Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets will make their way to smartphones, including a holographic user interface, a quick task launcher and sliding widgets. Ice Cream Sandwich will also expand Android's near-field communications capabilities.

Although many details of Ice Cream Sandwich remain unknown, creating a single platform for all devices is a big step for Google, and I'm sure there will be plenty of new features to match. As for hardware, Google has hinted at a new Nexus phone in time for the holidays, leading the way for other Ice Cream Sandwich-based smartphones.

Apple's ‘Future of iOS'

Then we have Apple's iOS5 Hp probook 4720s battery hp pavilion dv5 battery , which looks to be a major update for the iPhone. In rumors, iOS5 will include over-the-air updates, expanded voice recognition and a Web-based service called iCloud that stores all of your multimedia online. In June, Apple will reveal its operating system overhaul at the Worldwide Developers Conference, where the company says it'll discuss the "future of iOS and Mac OS."

Matching iPhone hardware probably won't arrive until the fall, according to several rumors. Like Android's next Nexus phone, the iPhone 5 -- or whatever it'll be called -- will be primed for battle during the holiday shopping season.

Windows Phone 7's late sprint

When Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 dell d630 battery dell d620 battery  in October, it had a lot of catching up to do. The list of missing features included copy-and-paste, third-party app multitasking, HTML 5 support, GPS navigation and podcast downloads. Copy/paste has been added already, and many other missing features will arrive with Windows Phones' "Mango" update, due this fall. But Microsoft is not just catching up; Mango will add other features that the competition doesn't have, such as the ability to jump to a specific section of an app from the home screen, and a search function that can call up data within third-party apps.

As for hardware, Microsoft's got a big partnership with Nokia, which could produce some slick-looking smartphones by the end of the year.

Other Players

These aren't the only players, of course. HP is trying to bring WebOS back to life with the Veer and Pre 3, and Research in Motion will push out new phones based on its Blackberry 7 OS.

So if you're going to be in the market for a new phone, stay tuned for later this year. The battle for smartphone supremacy is about to heat up, and it's going to be awesome.
