Apple Vs Android - Apple iPhone market climbs is hurting Android

Competition between Apple [AAPL] and Android devices has finally become more equal with the introduction of the Verizon iPhone in the US, driving Apple's market share and reach to climb at the expense of its rival. With new phone devices waiting in the wing for a likely September launch, competition between the two is set to intensify, with Apple taking on rivals in price, feature and reliability. Android hasn't won yet.

Apple climbs

Take a look at the latest data from Strategy Analytics. Released overnight, it reveals that Apple overtook ZTE in Q1 2011 to become the world's fourth-largest handset maker, up from sixth position one year ago.
Strategy Analytics tells us: "Apple shipped a record 18.6 million handsets worldwide in Q1 2011, more than doubling from 8.8 million units in Q1 2010. Apple captured fourth place in global handset shipments, rising from sixth position a year earlier and leapfrogging rival ZTE. Apple continues to benefit from strong operator subsidies and co-marketing, enabling its global handset share to reach a healthy 5 percent during the quarter."
That's 5 percent of the Acer as07b31 battery Acer as07b41 battery market on the basis of what is now four types of phone: the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4 for Verizon, the white iPhone 4 (unavailable in the period) and the iPhone 3GS. But all four of these devices deliver a consistent user experience, which Android devices inherently cannot promise.

New records

Apple reported record iPhone sales in its last quarter, shifting 18.65 million iPhones in the quarter, which ended March 26. This was an increase of 113 percent from the 8.75 million phones in the same period next year.

The only way (at the moment at least) is up, with rumors claiming Apple will introduce a new iPhone in September, expectation must also be there that the company will diversify its range more with the addition of phone features to its iPod range.

Consider this: an iPod phone wouldn't be an iPhone, lending flexibility in features -- but would likely be popular, would likely bring a little Apple 'innovation' to the feature phone market and would help Apple continue its clear strategy of building growth in the developing markets. In other words, Apple's set for growth.

Compare the market

How did competitors do? Not so well. As I keep saying, it isn't Apple Acer aspire 5520 battery Dell d620 battery the Android manufacturers are competing with -- it's each other. It's a tough business to be in.

    * There's Nokia, which shipped 108.5 million handsets worldwide in Q1 2011, up 1 percent year-on-year -- a pattern of below average growth the company has maintained for eleven quarters. Apple overtook Nokia by revenue in the period.

    * LG shipped a lower-than-expected 24.5 million handsets worldwide in Q1 2011, down 10 percent from a year earlier. The vendor’s handset shipments grew below the industry average and its global marketshare dipped to 7 percent, the lowest level since Q1 2007.

    * Samsung shipped 68.9 million handsets worldwide during the first quarter of 2011, up 7% from 64.3 million units a year earlier. Despite the hype surrounding its market-leading Android devices, Samsung's actual handset marketshare slipped from 22percent to 20 percent. 16 percent of Samsung's handsets are smartphones, and the company is battling HTC "for leadership of the Android market," notes Strategy Analytics.

    * Big business in Africa and Latin America, handset maker China's ZTE shipped 15.2 million handsets worldwide during Q1 2011. The company plans to move into manufacturing Android-based phones this year -- and that's bad news for Samsung and LG in the Android space, more of a challenge for Microsoft and Nokia Dell wr050 battery Dell gk479 battery , and even more disturbance in the force of RIM.

A quick check on market conditions (from Strategy Analytics):

"Global handset shipments grew 17 percent annually and reached 350 million units in Q1 2011, driven by surging smartphones in mature regions and popular multi-SIM models in emerging markets. This year will be the first year ever when every quarter exceeds 300 million units. The first quarter of 2011 was marked by supply-chain disruptions related to the Japan earthquake tragedy and by ongoing mild component constraints in areas such as touchscreens, memory and cameras. We expect the global industry's select component shortages to continue for at least the next 6 to 9 months, causing restricted volumes or rising input prices for some handset makers. But at this stage, on the whole, the operational challenges posed by these parts constraints remain minor rather than major for most players."

So, we can anticipate product component shortages, but with Apple already commanding a huge chunk of capacity, don't be surprised to see competitors totter once the company really begins cutting iPhone prices in the current quarter.

Listen, there is no such thing as a generic Android phone. There's only a plethora of different devices, all with different features, and all marketed as some dimorphous entity, called Android. Other than the OS, there's no reference point by which to consistently compare the plethora of Android devices to Apple's, at best you compare iPhones to specific Android phones, and the iPhone outsells any one of these.

With the move to Verizon, we now see a more equal competition between Apple and Android devices.
NPD claims Verizon iPhone sales have propelled Apple into becoming the third-largest mobile phone brand in the US, ahead of HTC, Motorola and RIM. The analysts claim iPhone took 14 percent of the US market in the first quarter of 2011, behind Samsung gateway squ-412 battery Hp pavilion dv5 battery (23 percent) and LG (18 percent).

Apple's winning the mind share game, too. A comScore report claims that if you include all the devices in the US using iOS (iPhones, iPads and iPod touches), Apple reached 37.9 million people. Android reached 23.8 million on phones and tablets. Apple leads by 59 percent.

In Europe, Apple leads Android by 116 percent. As colleague Jim Dalrymple remarks, "That is the truth."
So, where next for Apple's smartphone?

    * Media services in the cloud via iTunes
    * iPhone diversity
    * Price discounts
    * Further concentration on developing markets
    * More feature and software improvements
    * Quad-core processors with ever-more advanced graphics.

Meanwhile competitors are in thrall to an online advertising firm they have chosen to trust with their busines. Google is now the mother lode for future software development and innovation for the world's handset makers -- but how long will that innovation last if ads revenues decline?

Securing Firefox - RHEL 6 for the Clueless

How secure is “secure”? Nobody can decide for you. What I offer here is the measures I take before browsing the Net. From what I can tell, these measures are effective in that the data-mining and marketing industry has a very poor idea of who and where I am. Try looking yourself up on sites like Spokeo or Zabasearch to get an estimate of your online data trail. While your webbrowser is not the only source, nor even a major source, of such information, it is a part of the bigger effort. The whole idea is to make those data mining sites as inaccurate as hp 484170-001 battery possible. And maybe you don't care, but for those who do, I'd like to suggest a few configuration changes to improve things.

In the Firefox menu, select Edit > Preferences, then go to the Privacy tab. It’s almost blank, but if you hit the first drop-down button, you’ll see the option “Use custom settings for history.” This gives you access to detailed settings otherwise hidden. I set my browsing history at 9, and consider that loose, but convenient. It also speeds up the response of the URL bar when typing directly into it, since it’s not keeping a mile-long list. On the cookies settings, I accept third party cookies because too many sites I use require it for login. Then I select the “keep” policy at “Ask me every time.” That way I can train Firefox to block cookies I don’t want.
The policy of cookie blocking is three levels:

(1)accept always, (2) session cookies only (temporary until you close the browser) and (3) blocked. Every time you go to a site, you get to set the policy for each individual source of all the cookies that site tries to give you. It’s work, but eventually your browser learns enough you won’t see the popup control dialog so often. It helps if you are familiar with the major advertising and tracking companies out there, as I am. Also, if it matters to you, come back to this tab from time to time and click the button marked “Show Cookies…” to see what is in your browser’s cookie compaq 484170-001 battery  Acer as07b41 battery  cache at that time. To see what the policies are regarding each server domain name you’ve encountered — maybe you clicked the wrong button one one when the dialog popped up — try the button marked “Exceptions…” You can reset them by removing the server name, and even re-enter it manually right then if you like.

Now let’s add some extensions which will make your security stronger. In the menu line, click Tools > Add-ons. At the top of the dialog window select “Get Add-ons”. This will take you directly to the repository for Firefox addons. First, type in the search box “flashblock” — the first item it lists should be the Flashblock add-on. This is more than just an annoyance issue of uncontrolled Flash advertising. Flashplayer keeps cookies, too, in a separate place. If you only play the ones you want, there are fewer Flash cookies to deal with. Install it and restart Firefox. You don’t have Flashplayer, yet, but we’ll fix that soon enough.
Next, in similar fashion search down Adblock. Again, it’s not just the annoyance, but the images have cookies buried in them. They sit in your browser’s image cache and can be read by other servers trying to assemble a profile by tracking your habits. Each image will contain an identifying tag which is invisible when the image is displayed. Configure this to connect to the default listing server.

Do this for the Ghostery add-on, too. This actively blocks the most egregious tracking companies. Once installed, it has a wizard to set it up. Among the options, you should enable the active blocking and click “All” for the listing it shows. For fun, I enable the “bubble” option which opens a tiny square listing the servers blocked on each page. The wizard doesn’t show it, but if go back later and click on Ghostery in your Tools > Add-ons dialog, you’ll see a button for setting preferences, which offers more detail. I set the bubble to appear in the lower right-hand corner.

Thus far, these are things you can do on Windows, Mac, and every other operating system for which you can get Firefox Acer as07b71 battery . I find the other security add-ons a nuisance to use, because it requires too much specialized knowledge or are simply annoying to use. I really do not like No-Script. Though I actively hate JavaScript in the first place, too many sites are simply inaccessible unless you happen to select the correct combination of scripts to allow. It’s more control than I want or need.

Then there is the threat from “evercookies” — the cookies buried in some seven places in your system and can be regenerated each time you go online. In Windows land, you can install an add-on called “Click & Clean” and configure it to run CCleaner (from Piriform) every time the browser closes. CCleaner is quite intelligent about your cookies and keeps the ones you really have to have,Dell latitude e6400 battery  Dell d630 battery and offers you a chance to change the default settings on them. The closest thing to that for Linux is BleachBit, which is Open Source and even has a Windows version. It's not fully developed yet, so it may eventually offer features competitive with CCleaner. For now, it's pretty darn good at eating evercookies.

Chase the link on that page for Linux, then notice they make a package for quite a few Linux distributions. There is currently no RHEL 6, but if there were, it would work fine with CentOS and Scientific Linux 6. Instead, we have to keep in mind: RHEL is basically built from the base of Fedora 13 (FC13). Remember that, and for now, download the Bleachbit package for Fedora 13.

Keep that download tool window open. You can install it from there. Just double click on the name once it has finished downloading. RHEL will pop up a dialog about installing it with the package manager. Once you say "yes" and give your root password, it should find the dependencies automatically, in this case, something called "python-simplejson". If not, we'll have to work on that later. Right now, the point is this process is automated enough you shouldn't have to struggle with knowing too much detail.

Once it's installed, you can find Bleachbit in the menu: Applications > System Tools. Open the application and take a look at the check boxes for different applications it knows how to clean. For Firefox, I recommend you check only Cache, DOM Storage, Session restore, and Vacuum. Then you'll need to find where Flash is listed and click both items, Cache and Cookies. These are the places evercookies hide. I run it at the end of every day, to finish the process of what we accomplished in the other steps taken above.
That's about as much as we can do without some extended training on paranoid surfing habits. Your Firefox is now pretty secure from the worst of the online tracking measures.

By the way, I've not found any spyware or viruses online which affect Linux, particularly Red Hat. There are several reasons, the main one being no one writes malware for Linux. It isn't practical, though we could debate why. There is also this thing called SELinux, a set of measures developed by NSA so they could secure government Linux servers. In RHEL 5, it caused some trouble, and I always recommended folks disable it. But it's come quite a long way since then, and we will be keeping it for RHEL 6. Part of what it does is prevent harmful changes to the system. Also, RHEL has a default firewall which is pretty tight. Given there are currently precious few real online security threats to Linux computers compared to Windows, what you have right now is about as secure as it gets and is still reasonably usable on the Internet.

New Report - App Makers' Interest in Android Tablets Slows

The iPad may face increased competition from tablets running Android, but that's doing little to stoke the enthusiasm of mobile developers, according to a new survey from development software maker Appcelerator. The survey found that interest in developing for Android among Appcelerator's developers is plateauing, particularly when it comes to creating apps for Android-based tablets.

Of the 2760 Appcelerator developers surveyed from April 11 to 13, 85 percent reported an interest in developing apps for Android phones while 71 percent expressed interest in making apps for Android tablets. While those percentages are high, they're also down two and three percentage points respectively from the same survey Appcelerator dell inspiron mini 9 battery Acer as07a31 battery  conducted in January. The drop-off comes after Android had logged steady gains in developer interest over the past year, according to Appcelerator.

In contrast, Apple's iOS platform continues to interest Appcelerator developers. Interest in developing apps for the iPhone clocked in at 91 percent in the most recent survey, while iPad app interest was 86 percent. Those numbers are essentially unchanged from last quarter's survey, Appcelerator vice president of marketing Scott Schwarzhoff told Macworld.

Surveys of developer preference should always be taken with the customary grains of salt, but the latest Appcelerator numbers provide an interesting snapshot for a couple reasons. First, the survey features developers who use Appcelerator Titanium, a cross-platform mobile development tool--in other words, a crowd with an interest in building apps across multiple platforms. There's also the issue of timing--the survey comes after some of the multitude of tablets hyped at this year's Consumer Electronics Show have hit the market, giving mobile Acer as07b42 battery Toshiba pa3465u-1brs battery developers their first chance to see that hardware in action.

And that could be one of the main drivers behind developers' cooling enthusiasm toward making apps for Android tablets, according to Appcelerator's latest survey. Asked which areas pose the biggest risks to Android's success, two-thirds of the developers surveyed cited fragmentation, with 30 percent citing weak traction for tablets and 28 percent saying there were too many Android app stores. (Developers could cite more than one risk.)

With different versions of Android available for different devices, fragmentation has been a growing concern in the Android market. But Schwarzhoff argues that Android fragmentation is only part of the story: "Fragmentation is basically six layers deep," he said.

The most pressing concern for developers surveyed by Appcelerator is skill fragmentation--that is, the ability to build programs using different developing tools and languages. That's followed by fragmented OS capabilities--different mobile operating systems support different features--and then Android fragmentation. Developers are also concerned by the demands of developing for different devices (such as phones versus tablets) and building and support more than one app.

Appcelerator also found a disparity between interest in Android Compaq pavilion dv4 battery in general and enthusiasm for specific hardware. While 71 percent of the developers surveyed expressed an interest in building apps for an Android tablet, only 52 percent described themselves as very interested in the Galaxy Tab. That was the only Android tablet to top the 50 percent mark--just 44 percent said they were very interested in the Motorola Xoom, while 31 percent expressed an interest in the yet-to-be-released HTC Flyer.

"You could certainly draw the conclusion that the hardware is a significant drag factor in the interest toward Android development," said Schwarzhoff, adding that the initial high prices of Android tablets could be behind some of that diminished enthusiasm. It will be interesting to see if that changes as Android tablet price tags drop.

If the results of the Appcelerator survey were a disappointment to Google, they're downright depressing to both Microsoft and Research in motion. Interest in developing for the Windows Phone 7 platform fell seven percentage points from last quarter's survey to 29 percent. That was still good enough to land Windows Phone 7 in third place, as the Blackberry phone fell even further--interest dipped 11 percentage points to 27 percent.

The decline in interest among those platforms seems less about features and capabilities, Schwarzhoff noted. "Developers don't have the resources to devote to a third [mobile] OS," he added.

Disclaimer: Appcelerator conducts its surveys jointly with market research firm IDC, which is owned by the same parent company as Macworld.

Greenpeace: Apple Is the highest energy consumption

Sure, most of us consider the environmental impact our recycling habits or car's gas mileage may have.

But what about our text messages and status updates?

The energy that technology companies use storing and transmitting our data is becoming more of an environmental risk, according Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery  to a report from environmental group Greenpeace.

And according to the report, which was timed to coincide with Earth Day, Apple has some of the dirtiest data of all.

"How Dirty Is Your Data?" examines the amount and type of energy consumed by several top tech companies' data centers, the massive warehouses where banks of servers store information.

If the Internet was a country, it would rank fifth in the amount of energy consumed, just behind Japan and Russia, according to the report.

And in the report's ranking of nine major tech companies, Apple's data-storage practices earned the lowest "Clean Energy Index" score. The score considers the percentage of these data centers' electricity generated by "clean" energy such as solar or wind Acer aspire 5920 battery sony vgp-bps2a battery  power versus "dirtier" energy sources, such as coal and nuclear power.

(That score, Greenpeace acknowledges, is based on a limited amount of public data and required some speculation. The report says Greenpeace asked all the companies studied to provide complete data and then submitted scores to the companies for comment before the report was published.)

Apple's 6.7% score was largely based on its 500,000-square-foot facility coming online in Maiden, North Carolina. According to Greenpeace, that facility will consume as much energy as 80,000 homes in the United States, or nearly a quarter-million in Europe.

The North Carolina energy grid it uses is made up of only about 5% clean energy, the report says, with the rest coming from either coal (62%) or nuclear (32%).

Also scoring in single digits was HP, with a 9.9%, based on facilities fueled almost exclusively by coal and nuclear energy.

Topping the list were Yahoo! (55.9%) and Google (36.4%).

Yahoo! locates most of its data centers near sources of renewable energy, Greenpeace says, and Google is investing in wind and solar power Dell studio 1555 battery Acer as07b41 battery as well as making deals to buy power from companies that use sustainable means to create it.

"Their models should be employed and improved upon by other Internet ('cloud computing') companies," Greenpeace said in the report.

Also ranked in the report: Amazon (26.8%), Microsoft (25%), Twitter (21%),Facebook (13.8%) and IBM (10.9%).

While Facebook avoided the bottom of the list, Greenpeace says the ever-growing social networking site could be on its way.

"Facebook, one of the fastest growing and most popular destinations on the web, is unfortunately on track to be one of the most dependent cloud computing companies on coal-powered electricity, with over 53% of its facilities estimated to rely on coal to power the Facebook cloud," the report says.

Apple News - New iPhone 5 Mockup Is Ultra Sexy

Stay calm, it's only a mockup. But Apple's iPhone 5 will be either a thing of beauty or the ugliest phone in existence -- depending on your tastes -- should any element of a new but credible Photoshopped suggestion make it into the end product.

The image was created by former Engadget chief Joshua Topolsky based on a sketched design from one of his sources as well as hp pavilion dv4 battery credible rumors he's heard. Topolsky admits the sketch might be little more than one of many prototype designs, but what the hey--it's fun to speculate!

Rumors have already suggested a virtually bezel-free screen, for example, courtesy of glass bonding breakthroughs at Apple HQ. Topolsky claims this allows for a slightly larger screen area of 3.7 inches -- 0.2 inches larger than the iPhone 4, but still retaining the ultra high-resolution Retina Display of over 300 pixels per inch.

It's even suggested that, somehow, the microphone and speaker might be behind the glass, although this isn't shown in the mockup. Apple dell latitude d820 battery Hp probook 4210s battery has made much of how it carves MacBooks out of solid aluminum using lasers, including making microscopic holes for microphones and for power lights to shine through. It's possible the same techniques might have evolved so they can be used on glass, allowing sound to pass through.

In profile, Topolsky's iPhone 5 has a teardrop shape, rather like the MacBook Air, tapering towards the bottom, although Topolsky says this might not be as extreme as his mockup suggests, due to his lack of Photoshop skills.
One big change is the home button, which is expanded to become a "gesture area." How this works isn't clear, and in Topolsky's mockup the home button area is wide but not tall, indicating only side-to-side swipe gestures are possible. It's possible this is a labor-saving trick so users can simply swipe to activate the phone, rather than hit the home button first, and then swipe across the screen.

Although not featured in the mockup, the sketch Topolsky saw also showed induction-based power, which is to say, wire-free battery charging. This is already possible using third-party products so it isn't a leap of imagination, and there's been long-term rumors of Apple being interested in such technologies.

The sketch also showed what Topolsky calls a "swipe area," which he suggests could be a near field communication (NFC) area. It's been rumored that NFC will be coming to the iPhone 5, although it would be strange of Apple to draw attention to a small area of the phone for NFC purposes. NFC payments are designed around the idea of simply tapping any part of a device against a receiver.

Creating rumors and even mockups is a crime with no consequences. Nobody's going to chide Topolsky when the iPhone 5 arrives and his mockups turn out to be bunkum. In fact, many Apple-watchers suggest that the iPhone 5 won't look much different from the iPhone 4. However, there's little doubt that Topolsky's sexy imagery pours petrol onto the flames of the iPhone 5 hype machine.

Powerful G-Slate , Maybe iPad competitor & killer

Another day, another possible iPad killer. This week we have the G-Slate, from LG and wireless carrier T-Mobile, the first 4G-enabled tablet to run on Google's superb Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating system.
The G-Slate is the second major contender set to try to topple the Apple iPad's overwhelming supremacy, following the Motorola Xoom's February release on the Verizon network.

The G-Slate Acer as07b41 battery Dell d620 battery , released Wednesday, is $529.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year contract with T-Mobile. The tablet costs $749.99 without a wireless contract.

ATTRACTIVE SPECS

It's a beautiful widescreen package that is exactly what we've come to expect from these Android tablets.
Fast. Powerful. Feature-packed.

The G-Slate has two 5-megapixel cameras on the back that allow for 3D or HD video recording, a front-facing camera for video chat, 32 GB of internal memory and an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1 GHz processor.

The 3D video recording is more a gimmick than anything, but it's a fun gimmick. The tablet comes with one pair of 3D classes to watch your video back. Videos can also be sent out via HDMI to an HD television.

The G-Slate will connect to a WiFi network or T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, which the carrier is calling 4G. It's a souped-up version of the carrier's 3G network that it says will bring much faster download speeds.

In my testing of T-Mobile's Dell studio 1555 battery Dell vostro 1000 battery HSPA+ network, I regularly saw download speeds approach 4 or 5 megabits per second in metro Detroit, a definite increase over regular 3G speeds.

Verizon's superfast 4G network will soon come to the Xoom through a free hardware upgrade, which will bring consistent speeds approaching 15 megabits per second.

The one downside I found with the G-Slate's hardware was that it felt heavier than it should. At 1.3 pounds, it's just .03 pounds lighter than the iPad even though its footprint is considerably smaller.

SOFTWARE STILL LACKING

The Android tablet ecosystem is still lacking a significant, polished app presence, however. The number of tablet-optimized apps has increased a bit since the Xoom's release, but don't expect more than several dozen.
That pales in comparison to the Apple iPad, which has well more than 65,000 apps designed for the tablet's larger screen.

The overall Honeycomb experience is still very slick, though. The home screen widgets, which we first saw with the Xoom dell inspiron 6400 battery , are a great way to see information at a glance. Things like e-mail messages, calendar events and Web bookmarks display directly on the home screen, saving you a click or two to see what's inside.

One of my main beefs with Android, though, is still very much present on the G-Slate: the Gmail inbox is still inexplicably relegated to a separate app than all other e-mail accounts.

The G-Slate does have support for Adobe Flash video after a software download, although the experience is often a bit choppy.

PRICE GAME

The biggest customer repellent built into the G-Slate will almost surely be its price.

The G-Slate, along with other Android tablets, charges a purchase-prohibitive premium to buy it without a 2-year wireless contract.

If you're fine with your home's WiFi connection - as millions of iPad customers are - you'll have to shell out just shy of $750 for the 32 GB G-Slate. That's $150 more than a similarly outfitted iPad.

As great as these Android tablets are, that's a high bar to clear.

Motorola hasn't released sales numbers, but analysts expect the Xoom to ship just 300,000 units this quarter, while the iPad is expected to sell as many as 60 million units in 2011.

Competition can only be good for the tablet market, which is in dire need of some serious contenders to shake the iPad's dominance.

Unfortunately we're still waiting.

Is that the tablet will never outstrip PC shipments ?

Ubuntu today announced its latest Linux release, version 11.04 Natty Narwhal. It follows the trend toward smaller screens with a streamlined interface, but developer Canonical says it will not follow the tablet frenzy – at least not  yet.

Ubuntu 11.04 will be available for download on April 28 and arrive with significant changes in its interface. It will include Unity, which first appeared in Ubuntu 10.10 for netbooks back in October 2010. Unity features an app launcher on the left of the Dell inspiron 1526 battery dell inspiron 6400 battery  screen. There is also additional touch screen support that now includes gestures for tasks such as scrolling as well as expanding and contracting screens.

At first sight, we somewhat felt that Ubuntu may now be moving its Linux OS also toward a new generation of post-PC era devices, especially tablets. For example, there is the interface that heavily borrows from elements that we have seen in smartphones, plus there are plenty of touch improvements. However, Gerry Carr, Ubuntu’s Director of Communications, told ConceivablyTech that this is not necessarily the case: While Ubuntu is already running on ARM architectures and he promised at least one commercial Ubuntu tablet to debut this year, it is the PC that will remain the main focus of Ubuntu.

“For every tablet, 1000 PCs are sold,” said Carr. “The tablet will never outstrip PC shipments.” He somewhat agreed that the netbook has already seen its brightest days, but noted that the netbook form factor would be merging into other types of devices. I personally still believe it is surprising that we are not seeing Ubuntu in a more prominent position on tablets Dell latitude d600 battery Dell latitude c610 battery , given the fact that it was this Linux OS that was aggressively marketed back in 2005 and 2006 when Intel presented its concept for the mobile Internet device (MID). Intel’s MID idea eventually drowned and unfortunately took down Ubuntu’s ultra mobile version with it.

There is no interest at Canonical to develop a Ubuntu version for smartphones and it appears that Canonical is much more focused on offering an alternative for Windows 7. Carr said that Canonical will be directing Ubuntu 11.04 toward the Dell inspiron 1440 battery  mainstream market and try to “convert” Windows users via social as well as direct marketing activities. “We are looking for curious Windows users and they will find Ubuntu to be a place where they are welcome and they will find an OS that is very easy to use.”

Of course, Ubuntu is also offered in contrast to Apple’s Mac OS X and iOS in future tablet devices and continues to promote a “free and open minded use”. Carr said that while Canonical will also have to make certain decisions for the user, the company will not be overstepping its limits and integrate features such as “call home.” In that philosophy, Ubuntu will remain an “open playground” where its users “can define their own experience,” Carr said.

IBM News - IBM to support Windows servers on mainframes

IBM says it will support servers running Microsoft Windows on one of its mainframe platforms by the end of this year.

In a post last week titled "zEnterprise support for Microsoft Windows," IBM said, "In the fourth quarter of 2011, IBM intends to offer select IBM System x blades running Microsoft Windows Gateway squ-412 battery in the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension Model 002."

HISTORY: Microsoft Windows after 25 years

zEnterprise is a mainframe product line introduced last year, while System x is IBM's line of x86 servers for Windows and Linux. With the BladeCenter extension, System x servers are integrated with the mainframe and managed from the same console.

Analyst Wayne Kernochan of Infostructure Associates expressed excitement about IBM's upcoming move in a new article titled "IBM's 2011 System z: Windows Support Is Big News."

It's not quite full integration between Windows Toshiba pa3533u-1brs battery Sony vgp-bps8a battery and the mainframe but it's an important step, he writes. Windows and the mainframe, he notes, have been the two most difficult server platforms to combine, partly due to technical difficulties and partly because IBM and Microsoft seem to think "users just don't care that much."

"Full support of application-level administration and load balancing for Windows platforms is not yet in the IBM roadmap," Kernochan writes. "And as for full integration of Windows platforms with the mainframe in a private cloud, that's at the very least not yet in the roadmap, and perhaps a goal that may never be reached."

Still, he adds, "This does not mean that IBM's planned support for Windows on zEnterprise is incomplete. On the contrary, IBM has applied its usual combination of strong technology and services to allow users to implement IBM System x blades running Windows that integrate seamlessly into the overall zEnterprise solution."

Kernochan also discusses the value of integrating Windows, Linux and IBM's z/OS mainframe operating system.
"If we can imitate enough of Windows on Linux or on Linux-supporting blades, we can move most Windows apps to scale-up servers when needed (Unix/Linux and/or mainframe)," he writes.

Third-party vendors will make tools to treat Windows Hp pavilion dv6 battery Hp pavilion dv4 battery virtual machines "as just another system for purposes of backup/recovery, monitoring, load balancing, and distributed-application creation," Kernochan writes. Those tools won't be ready in 2011, but "even with these limitations, IBM's promised Windows support will be immediately valuable to many organizations," he writes.

The IBM announcement said System x blades running Linux will be available for zEnterprise beginning in the third quarter of 2011. IBM initially did not plan to add Windows support, but changed course based on customer feedback.

"The reaction to delivering IBM System x capabilities has been very positive, with our clients also asking that we support Microsoft Windows," IBM says.

Know About Batteries – Improve You Battery Life

Improve You Battery Life post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk
Battery life is one of the most influential things regarding your mobility, but laptops with a longer battery life usually cost accordingly. What to do if you don’t have the money?
What makes a laptop mobile? The weight and volume that allow carrying it from one place to other of course, but most importantly – the fact that it doesn’t need a constant electrical supply and is not tied to the electricity network, but comes with its own battery. This is exactly the reason why battery time, or “battery life” are such an important factor influencing the true mobility you’re receiving.
Some laptops come with a guarantee (that they not sure they can uphold) for a significantly longer battery life, but most laptops these days offer a typical life of two to five hours. How long you’ll actually receive? That’s up to you.
What affects the battery time?
The laptop’s battery Dell vostro 1500 battery Dell d620 battery time is affected by a variety of factors, mostly having to do with the work load placed on the various components.
The most electricity consuming component in the computer is usually the screen. The bigger it is and the more its rear lighting is stronger, the more his electricity consumption increases and the battery life shortens. Other electricity consumers are the processor (CPU) and the graphic inserter (GPU), that when required to work, consume more electricity. These are usually followed by the hard drive and wireless communication.
The differences between the various laptops in terms of their battery time, mostly relate to these factors. For example computers that specifically designed to provide a longer battery life usually utilize LED screen which are economical and a poorer processor (LV/ULV) which is a little slower but its electricity consumption is significantly lower.
Integrated graphic accelerators consume less electricity that accelerators installed on a separate card (Descrete), when the latter offer better performance. The new Intel mobile platforms (Centrino 2) and AMD offer a combination between the two methods with the option to switch between them during the use according to priority – more performance or more battery time.

It’s important to know about batteries
The first thing you should do to ensure you receive as long as possible battery time, is to choose your computer wisely. All manufacturers publish data regarding the battery time on their websites, in the technical specification of each computer. This data should be taken with a limited guarantee and cross reference with independent data received from field tests technology journalists hold and are plentiful online.
Note that a large part of laptops can be purchased with a “regular” batter or a “strong” battery Replacement Acer aspire 5920 battery that can often provide almost double the work time, at a cost of a few extra dollars and a few more grams. If battery time is important to you, you’re better off purchasing the computer with the stronger batter. It is acceptable to distinguish between batteries according to the Cell number it includes; most computers can be acquired with 6 cells and 9 cell and some cases there are also 4, 8 and 12 cells. The method of calculation changes from one computer to the other, so there’s no point doing the arithmetic.
And by the way, if your mobile is a year or two years old or more and you feel the battery time is shortening – it is more than likely you’re right. The charging power of the battery decreases as time goes by and the number of charges increases.
    Using work settings
Most laptops from recent years, support various technologies to reduce the electricity consumption of various components, so the computer knows to adapt the action of the various components operation with requirements (for example, reducing the speed of the processors clock while writing a document in the word processor when its not fully necessary). Windows systems allow operating these technologies automatically and most manufacturers provide along with the computer a dedicated software tool to mange Discount Acer aspire 5520 battery power.
Usually, all you need to do is look for the battery icon in the corner of the screen, click and choose Power saver mode (If you don’t have such an icon, look inside the control panel, Power Options – Advanced and change the appropriate settings). If you’re not “stressed” you can choose the “Balanced” mode in which the OS balanced between the need for performance and battery life. When you’re connected to the electricity network you can choose the “High Performance” mode.
    Proper use of the screen
To reduce power consumption of the screen it is recommended that you first switch it to the lowest clarity level and then gradually increase it and let your eyes adjust. Stop at the lowest clarity level you can handle without straining your eyes.
Note that the optimal clarity level is also affected by environmental conditions. For example, if you’re at a well lit location it is recommended to look for shadow. The viewing angle of the screen is also very significant – if you adjust it at a slightly sharper angle you’ll need a higher clarity setting.
    Turning off and disconnecting plugins
If you find yourself on a flight or a long drive without an internet connection you won’t be able to surf so there’s no reason for you not to switch off the communication plug ins of the computer hp 530 battery Hp 530 adapter . Most new computers have a special switch that allows turning off their WiFi option and others have an appropriate keys combination (usually FN+F2 OR FN+F5, search documentation).
In the same way, it is recommended in case needed (meaning when you see the battery is running low), to disconnect any plug in that receives power through the USB interface, such as a Disk on Key, External driver or optical mouse. The optical driver should only be used when necessary.
    Appropriate use of software
Some applications deplete the battery quickly: viewing a movie in full screen mode, running a game, an application that requires intensive action by the disk such as virus scanning or defragmentation. Delay what you can, make sure you close every unnecessary software and when you finish using a certain program shut it down before moving on to the next.  If you’re right at the end of the batter and are not connected to the net you can also turn off your antivirus program.
What you can’t shut down or don’t want to give up, can be “minimized”. Viewing video on part of the screen instead of a full screen consumes less power. Power consumption while playing music is a function of volume control – so turn it down.
If you’re using software that performs background scans of the computer, such as Google Desktop Search or Copernic, turn it off because they work the hard disk overtime. It is also recommended to turn off Windows Index service that does the same. To do that, type in services.msc in the command line and press Enter to enter Windows services list. Search for Indexing Service (XP) or Windows High quality Dell wr050 battery Search (Vista) right click and choose stop.
If you’re not using Windows built in search tools, it is recommended to make the following change:  begin as previously explained and when you reach the appropriate service right click it choose Properties and change the setting from Automatic to Manual and confirm. This change will also enhance performance and save battery time.

A few other things that could help
Defragment the disk often. Of course while it is plugged in. the defragmentation will accelerate the hard drive and improve performance as well as reduce the range of the disks operation and thus prolonging battery life .
Install an additional memory. The appropriate memory volume (1GB or more for XP and at least 2GBfor Vista) reduce use of virtual memory and thus minimize use of the hard drive and prolong battery life.
Clean the battery connections. Every few months remove the battery and clean its metal contacts with an alcohol soaked cloth.
Don’t count on the StandBy mode. It uses less power but will still deplete the battery slowly. Execute a proper shut down.

Windows & Interoperability News - IE10 and Windows Phone 'Mango' Update

Microsoft this week offered previews of the Windows Phone 7 "Mango" update, Internet Explorer 10, and Silverlight 5. It also pushed through a massive Patch Tuesday.
Microsoft’s week involved two conferences, featuring executives who detailed plans for the cloud and products such as Windows Phone 7 Dell precision m6400 battery .

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, speaking April 11 at the Convergence conference in Atlanta, reiterated his company’s focus on the cloud. “Make no mistake, when it comes to the cloud, Microsoft’s all in,” he told the audience. “Every one of our products will be engineered to deliver the full benefits of the cloud.”

The company’s latest cloud efforts include releasing the next versions of its ERP (enterprise-resource planning) applications on the Windows Azure platform. At the conference, Microsoft also provided a glimpse of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, an ERP application whose beta is due this month. The platform includes Unified Natural Models, a library of business processes for real-world situations, and enhanced business-intelligence capabilities for discovering fresh insights in data.

Microsoft claims that its ERP applications due to migrate to the cloud will share the same functionality as the on-premises solutions already in its stable. Microsoft Dynamics Marketplace will serve as a hub for services and cloud-based add-ons designed to help businesses meet their workflow needs.

Ballmer also suggested that Windows Hp hstnn-db42 battery Hp pavilion dv4 battery would start finding its way onto devices other than the traditional PC.

“There are more than 1 billion Windows PCs in the hands of customers around the world today, and in January, we announced that the next version of Windows will support system-on-a-chip architectures from Intel, AMD and ARM,” he told the audience. “So, whatever device you use now or in the future, Windows will be there.”
ARM-based systems from companies such as Qualcomm, Nvidia and Texas Instruments currently power a wide range of popular mobile devices, including tablets. In theory, SoC support would allow some version of Windows to appear on those devices, although Microsoft remains tight-lipped about details of any next-generation operating system.

Throughout early April, bloggers Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, in a series of postings on Rivera’s Within Windows blog, have dissected what they call an early build of “Windows 8,” which includes some features—such as a lock screen with an icon for power management—seemingly designed for portable devices.
Meanwhile, Microsoft used this week’s MIX11 conference in Las Vegas to position its Windows Phone 7 platform as a viable one for both consumers and developers, despite lagging relatively far behind Google, Research In Motion and Apple in market share.

As part of that, Microsoft prepped developers during the conference for the May release of the updated Windows Phone Developer Tools, which will theoretically allow for the creation of more integrated and high-performance applications. Platform features include application multitasking for background processing, audio and file transfer, and fast application processing, as well as the ability to leverage augmented reality experiences.

Microsoft Dell inspiron mini 9 battery also detailed the next Windows Phone 7 software update, code-named “Mango,” which will allow smartphones to download new applications and content in the background, and stream music via one application while working in another. It will also feature a faster Internet Explorer 9. Angry Birds will appear on the platform in May (because what else do you do with a smartphone?), and Skype and the Spotify music application will appear in the autumn timeframe.

One Microsoft executive also used the conference to offer something of an apology for the issues surrounding the smartphone platform’s February and March updates.

“We felt it would be better to be a little bit patient, make sure that when we get updates out that they would happen reliably, and, unfortunately, that caused a delay in getting things out,” Joe Belfiore, director of Windows Phone program management, told the audience during his keynote, according to a Reuters posting. That being said, he also seemed positive about updates such as Mango being delivered on time.

In addition to Windows Phone 7, MIX11 gave developers a glimpse of the beta for Kinect for Windows SDK and a Silverlight 5 beta. Dean Hachamovitch, corporate vice president of Internet Explorer, offered a breakdown of the upcoming Internet Explorer 10, which builds on IE 9’s native HTML5 support and performance optimization. “Internet Explorer 10 will push the boundaries of what developers can do on the Web even further,” he said.

Outside the big conferences, it was somewhat business as usual. Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday update was notably massive, with 17 security bulletins designed to address 64 vulnerabilities, with nine rated “critical” and eight “important.” Fifteen of the bulletins addressed vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to execute code. It was not only the biggest Patch Tuesday of 2011, but the largest to date from the company—surpassing the October 2010 update, which patched 49 bugs.

One of the bulletins covers the object-management memory-corruption issue from Internet Explorer 8 that was exploited in March’s CanSecWest Pwn2Own hacking competition. Microsoft also addressed vulnerabilities within the Windows kernel that could be used to circumvent user access control and other processes.
“Sixty-four vulnerabilities is a very large amount, so organizations should be prepared,” said Dave Marcus, McAfee Labs director of security research and communication.

Investor Roger McNamee predicted Microsoft's Windows is a dying business

Investor Roger McNamee had a fascinating interview this morning on CNBC in which he predicted Microsoft's Windows is a dying business.

"I think Microsoft Windows, this is the cycle where it stops growing," he said.

"The availability of iPads and smartphones is allowing corporations to trade down and eliminate the thousand dollars per year of supporting a Windows Hp 510 battery Hp dv6000 battery desktop. And this is the year where windows has fallen below 50% of internet connected device down from 97% a few years ago."

He may be right -- PC sales are dipping and the recovery will be harder thanks to the rise of the iPad. Or, there's always a chance Steve Ballmer and Microsoft will stage a spectacular comeback with Windows Phone Windows 8 and end up owning the mobile and tablet markets in 2020 anyway.

But here's the weird part: McNamee thinks Windows is dying, but he'd buy Microsoft anyway because of the company's strong position in email.

"When you're a monopolist in an important category -- and they are for sure a monopolist relative to email with Exchange -- they're going to be able to crank prices on Exchange. I actually think Microsoft is a buy."
McNamee is a smart guy -- Bill Gates once credited him as a sounding board for his 1994 book "The Road Ahead" -- and has made some great investment decisions over the years, like taking an early huge stake in Facebook for Elevation Partners.

But imagining that Exchange as a replacement for the Windows business just bizarre for a bunch of reasons:

        * Market share. Exchange Server has majority market share -- most estimates put it above 70%, and higher in larger enterprises. But it doesn't have the 90%+ share that Microsoft Hp hstnn-db42 battery Hp pavilion dv6 battery has enjoyed with Windows (and DOS before it) for the last 20-plus years.

        * Sales. Windows had about $18 billion in sales last year. The last time Microsoft revealed Exchange numbers was FY'07, when it had sales of $1.5 billion and a compound annual growth rate of 27%. Even assuming that rate remained constant -- which it almost certainly did NOT during the recession of 2008 and 2009 -- Exchange would have had $2.8 billion in sales in FY'10.

        * Margins. Windows has one of the greatest operating margins of any legal business in history -- consistently above 70%, and occasionally topping 80%. Exchange sells in lower volumes, faces more competition, and requires longer and more personalized sales cycles, which almost certainly means it's got lower margins.

    dell latitude d620 battery

    * Competition. Older on-premise messaging systems like Lotus are slowly dying, but Exchange faces serious price pressure from Web-based email providers, particularly Google's Gmail. Microsoft has responded with Exchange Online, its own hosted service, but it's already had to lower prices on the service once.

        * Strategy. Windows pulls through sales of Office and other desktop software, which in turn pulls through sales of business servers (including Exchange). Its ubiquity helps Microsoft sell Windows Server and other enterprise software. Its huge margins allow Microsoft to pour money into projects like search and Xbox, which pressure the competition.

If Windows dies, Microsoft will have do do a lot more than monopolize email to replace it.
McNamee was much more bearish about Intel and PC makers, saying the switch from the PC "is going to be brutal on them."

Apps Newest product - Apple TV set could be coming this year

Apple continues to make headway into the living room with its Apple TV set-top boxes, HDMI-sporting Mac Minis, and the latest iPad, which can be hooked up to TV sets using a $39 AV adapter. But the prediction that keeps surfacing is that Apple plans to take a step out of the process of getting content to the TV by offering a TV set of its own.

In a note to investors, picked up by AppleInsider, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White said that Apple Compaq nc6000 battery Compaq nc4200 battery was moving towards offering a TV set of its own "at a faster pace than the market expected," and could have that product launch by the end of the year. The proof to back up those claims are "data points" from the company's research.

Details of what such a set would offer were not included, short of saying that it would do more than Apple's existing $99 Apple TV device.

This, of course, is not the first time analysts have suggested Apple is hard at work on a connected TV set. An estimate around this time last year by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who has been trumpeting the Apple-made TV set idea for years, projected Apple offering such a product in a two- to four-year time span. A more recent note by Munster from January suggested that an Apple-made TV was more likely to arrive sometime in 2012.

As for Apple TV rumor itself, one of the critical aspects is the idea of Apple offering a subscription service for content. For portable devices like the iPhone Compaq pavilion dv6 battery , iPod and iPad, offering music makes plenty of sense. But with something like a TV, the idea is best served with video content. Apple currently offers season passes for TV shows, but it does not scale to fit the pricing structures for multiple programs. The idea here would be to make it more like Netflix where there's a fee that covers multiple pieces of content.

Recent reports have claimed that Apple is on the verge of unveiling such a subscription service for video content, which will make use of its newest data center in North Carolina. Competitors like Amazon have already beaten Apple to the punch with their own streaming services, though they offer a smaller catalog of content than what Apple could potentially provide.

Adding fuel to the fire, Apple put out a job listing back in February for someone to work on "new power management designs and technologies," for use on various Apple products, including a "TV."

Apple itself has been building on the capabilities of the Apple TV, recently including new apps for MLB.TV and NBA League Pass. Rumors have also persisted that Apple intends to build in an application distribution system similar to the App Store on iOS and on the Mac OS, which would let users extend what the hardware is capable of post-purchase. This is something TV makers already offer, but that could prove to be highly profitable if combined with a subscription service too.

Nokia facing challenge - HTC overshadows Nokia at smartphone launches

The scale of the challenge facing Nokia in the all-important smartphones market was underscored on Tuesday when a powerful new handset from Taiwan's HTC overshadowed two new models from the Finnish giant.

HTC, the world's fifth-largest smartphone maker, launched HTC Sensation, offering an entire library of movie and TV shows via a wide screen, with a fast 1.2GHz processor which is particularly important for services such as games.

Nokia, which dumped its once-dominant Symbian software earlier this year after falling behind Apple in the high-end handset Acer as07b41 battery Acer as07b31 battery market, launched two new models in a bid to stem customer defections while it works on a new offering.

The Nokia phones will run on an improved Symbian software, with new icons, better text input, faster Internet browsing and a refreshed Ovi Maps application, while the company develops its new devices using software from Microsoft.

"The new HTC Sensation phone reflects the mountain Nokia needs to climb to close the hardware and software gap with its rivals," said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight.

"On the day Nokia unveils the 600Mhz X7 'entertainment phone' it has been trumped by HTC's Sensation which has a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor".

Apple's iPhone was using 600 MHz processors two years ago.

Nokia's new chief executive Stephen Elop dropped Nokia's Symbian software in February, saying the company would instead use Microsoft's unprovenAcer aspire 5920 battery  Acer aspire 6935g battery technology, after he described it as a burning platform in a widely leaked internal memo.

Elop said the Symbian technology was no longer good enough for the future of the world's largest phone maker by volume.

    THE CHALLENGE FROM ASIA

HTC unveiled its new handset in London, touting its easy access to content such as movies and more personalized favorites such as photos, updates from social networking sites and stock price changes.
The phone, which will be aimed at the premium end of the market and will compete with the iPhone among others, will use Google's Android software, which ended the 10-year reign of Nokia's Symbian as the pre-eminent smartphone platform.

The phone will also feature HTC Watch, a service that enables users to watch videos from a library of the latest movies and TV shows without having to wait for the content to finish downloading.
The new Nokia  xps m1330 battery  Dell studio 1555 battery models, the E6 and the X7, will go on sale for 340 euros ($491.6) and 380 euros respectively excluding subisidies and taxes, later this quarter.

SMALLER PROFITS, LESS JOBS AT NOKIA

Part of Nokia's problem has been that for years it struggled to attract developers to build new offerings, due in part to Symbian's cumbersome tools compared to those for the iPhone or Google's Android platform.
It had been hoping its larger scale would compensate for additional investment demanded from developers.
Nokia's services chief Tero Ojanpera stuck to the target of selling some 150 million Symbian phones in coming years, before it winds down their production, and said daily downloads at Nokia's Ovi Store have grown to 5 million.

In comparison, Apple is expected to sell a total of 150 million iPhones in 2011-2012.

"It's just a bit too late to put Humpty Dumpty back together," said Tero Kuittinen, analyst at MKM Partners of Nokia. "Developers are bailing out in droves."

Nokia's weakening position in the high end of the Dell vostro 1310 battery Dell vostro 1500 battery market is expected to drag its underlying first-quarter earnings per share 29 percent below last year's, a Reuters poll of 31 analysts showed on Tuesday.
Underlying operating profit at its key phone unit -- an important metric for the company -- is expected to drop to 8.6 percent from 12.1 percent a year earlier.

Nokia is scheduled to report January-March earnings on April 21, and it has also said it would unveil large job cuts stemming from its Microsoft deal in late-April.

Shares in Nokia were 2.9 percent weaker at 6.11 euros by 1505 GMT.
