New Nine-Cell Battery Laptops Offer All-Day Power To Computing

All-day batteries have been claimed for over a year but new 30-hour laptops are truly fulfilling this dream .
Lenovo, Sony, Dell and HP are kicking off a power-play with claims of between 10 and 32 hours of battery life in a clutch of laptop releases. Although the life expectancy covers quite a range, it seems the workday battery-operated notebook is now a reality.
One enabler of the long battery life is the introduction of Intel’s Sandy Bridge family of processors with integral graphics capabilities, or 2nd Generation Core processors as they are now known, but better power management and innovative battery arrays also play their part.

The battle of the nine-packs

Lenovo has released two ThinkPad notebooks that offer long battery life. The T420s has a native battery life of around seven hours but a second battery can be used to extend this to over 10 hours. The downside is that the cheap laptop batteries replaces the optical disc drive so DVDs and CDs cannot be accessed.
Its more powerful sibling, the T420, has greater lasting power through its nine-cell battery, compared with the 420s six-cell. This offers a battery life of 15 hours. Using a second battery, called a “slice”, that docks with the underside of the notebook, this long life can be expanded to an incredible 30 hours. Even using the eWEEK Europe reality check method of halving the stated battery life, the figures are still impressive.
The Lenovo nine-cell battery slice is an optional extra and adds to the weight and thickness to the slimline laptop. Greater Hp dv6700 power still carries a price.
The almost simultaneous arrival of competitors from HP and Dell is hardly surprising because all three companies had to stall their launches when a flaw was discovered in a companion chipset for the second generation Core processors. Some already-released models had to be recalled.

HP and Dell lock horns

The last time Dell and HP went head-to-head, HP ran an ad campaign mocking Dell’s Latitude E6400 with the slogan “Dude, your Dell died five hours ago”. This was a reference to the 24-hour battery claim from HP for its Elitebook 6930p.
This time around, Dell looks determined not to be caught out again and has not specified battery life for its Sandy Bridge-based XPS 15 and 17 models. Assuming that battery life for the new range is better than the Latitude’s former 19 hours, the estimated life for the high end model in the XPS 17 range – which features a 3D screen – could hold a lesson.
The XPS 17, supplied with 3D glasses, has a battery life of just over five hours, despite a nine-cell Acer aspire 6935g 1500 battery. Dell does not specify if this is native or with a slice in place but, assuming it is without, ten hours of use seems rather a large drop from over 19 hours – perhaps this reduction is the price to be paid for 3D screens.
HP seems ready if Dell does release battery performance details. It has just released the Elitebook 8460p and 8560p. The 8560p can be fitted with the HP Ultracapacity Notebook Battery to give 32 hours of mains-free time.

Battery life the main differentiator

Sony is taking the bespoke route with its Vaio S series using 2nd Gen Core processors. Because the notebooks are available in various configurations, battery life has not been specified. However, there are pre-configured units such as the unattractively named VPCSB1X9E/S which is at the lower end of the battery life scale.
According to Sony, the configured Vaio has a single battery life of seven hours which can be increased to 14 hours with the “extended” Smart Battery option.
Suffice to say that all of the hp laptops 4210s battery compete equally on memory of 4MB and over, integral HD cameras and HD-capable screens, with hundreds of gigabytes of storage. It does seem that battery life is, for the time being , the main differentiator.

Although there seems to be a bit of tussling going on to show off who has the best-developed nine-pack, it is at least pretty safe to say that the all-day battery has arrived – but what effect the arrival of 3D will have, assuming that there will be a business need for it, is a question to which we may just be seeing an answer.

Science News – New battery technology by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

U.S. researchers say they’ve developed a new lithium-ion battery that can heal itself, last longer and provide more safety in today’s electronics.
Scientists at the University of Illinois looked at the chemistry of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries — found in cellphones, laptop computers, digital cameras and other portable electronics — and found that like all batteries they tend to break down over time, NewScientist.com reported Tuesday.

“There are many different types of degradation that happen, and fixing this degradation could help us make longer-lasting batteries,” Scott White, a UI materials engineer, said.
One site of damage is the battery’s negatively charged terminal, the anode, which swells and shrinks as the battery is charged and then discharges over time, eventually creating cracks that can interfere with the flow of current and, ultimately, kill the batteryAcer as07b51 battery Dell d830 battery .
White embedded tiny microspheres in the anode that would tear open as the anode began cracking, releasing a liquid metal alloy, indium gallium arsenide, that fills the cracks in the anode and restores the flow of electricity.
White also developed a system to keep batteries from overheating and catching fire in the event of a short circuit within the battery.
“It’s not a common occurrence, but when it happens, the consequences are severe,” White said.
White developed a second kind of microsphere made of solid polyethylene, embedded in the anode and other battery components.

  • If the temperature inside the battery rises above 221 degrees Fahrenheit, the spheres melt into a thin layer of insulating material that shuts off the flow of electricity, preventing a fire.
“We’ve tested this in real batteries,” said White, whose research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. “It works beautifully.”

Laptop buying guide – What kind of laptop is right for You?

While a laptop has become a ubiquitous accessory for modern life, the actual process of choosing the right model can take some serious time and research.
In this guide, we’ll outline the different categories of laptops and which types are best for different users. We’ll also take a look at CPU, hard-drive, and networking options.
Below are a handful of typical user experiences that should help outline what type of laptop Acer aspire 5920 battery is right for you. Chances are, you’ll fall somewhere in between two or more of these archetypes, so carefully consider what you’ll be using your new laptop  for.

What are the different categories of laptops?

The different product categories that laptops fall into is constantly evolving and changing. The introduction of Netbooks in particular has created a relatively new category that has quickly become the fastest-growing segment of the PC market.
While there are many ways to divide the categories–based on weight, price, and components–we use screen size as our primary deciding factor, as it’s the clearest physical difference between types of laptops.

    UMPC

UMPCs (or ultramobile PCs) are small handheld devices with screens that are between 5 and 7 inches, but they never really caught on. While the idea of a palm-size computer Dell d620 battery running Microsoft Windows and including most of the features you’d find on a full-size desktop or laptop was an engaging one, most of these devices were not exactly practical outside of a handful of specialized users.
Many lacked physical keyboards and relied on slow, expensive low-voltage processors and wonky touch interfaces. A typical UMPC, such as the Sony Vaio UX390, could cost $2,000 or more.
In the past two years, the iPhone, iPod Touch, and inexpensive Netbooks have largely made this an unnecessary category. The few UMPCs that remain are less expensive, using Netbook components, but are still not terribly useful.
    Key features:
    5- to 7-inch display
    Nontraditional design

    Netbook

Depending on who you ask, Netbooks are either the most exciting thing to happen to mobile computing in years, Acer aspire 4520 battery or they are the downfall of an industry engaged in a painful price war race to the bottom. We generally define Netbooks as having 7- to 12-inch screens, a full keyboard, and an inexpensive, single-core low-voltage CPU.
While the earliest Netbooks had 7-inch screens and Intel Celeron processors, the typical Netbook today has a single-core Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and runs either Windows XP or Windows 7.
Small and lightweight, they lack optical drives, have tiny keyboards and touch pads, and are generally underpowered for anything other than Web surfing, e-mailing, and basic office productivity. The payoff is that a typical Netbook can be had for less than $300, an unheard-of sum just a few years ago.
PC makers are currently trying to upgrade Netbooks with faster CPUs and bigger screens, Acer aspire 6935g battery hp 510 Battery and these new models blur the line with the ultraportable category.
    Key features:
    9- to 12-inch display
    No optical drive
Single-core low-voltage CPU, Intel Atom or comparable
    Typically less than $500

    Ultraportable

Before the rise of Netbooks, ultraportable systems were 11- and 12-inch laptops with then-expensive low-voltage CPUs, allowing them to be small and power efficient, but still relatively underpowered.
The popularity of Netbooks had threatened to make this category irrelevant–after all, who would pay $1,500 or more for an 11-inch laptop, when a $300 10-inch Netbook hp nx6100 battery Hp dv9000 adapter was a reasonable substitute for basic Web and office tasks?
The ultraportable has been revived of late with the introduction of Intel’s new low-cost consumer ultralow-voltage CPUs. These chips are slightly more expensive and somewhat more powerful than the Netbook Intel Atom CPU, and are available in both single-core and dual-core versions.
Some PC makers are calling the thin, upscale laptops that include these new processors “ultrathin,” rather than ultraportable, now. Many of these new versions lack an internal optical drive.
    Key features:
    9- to 12-inch display
    Low-voltage ULV CPU
    No optical drive
    Typically $600-$800

    Thin-and-light

This somewhat unimaginative descriptor is intended for 13-inch laptops. Why do laptops with 13-inch displays deserve their own distinct category? It’s because they occupy a unique space in the industry. We define this by pointing out that a 13-inch laptop is the smallest size we’d be able to work on comfortably all day, and at the same time, the largest size we’d consider carrying around more than once or twice a week.
While it’s not the Dell d830 battery hp nc8430 battery perfect size for either task, it walks the line reasonably well between both. A prime example is the extremely popular 13-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro–perhaps the most imitated laptops of all time.
    Key features:
    13-inch display

    Midsize (aka mainstream)

The traditional 15-inch laptop, along with its newer 14- and 16-inch offshoots, make up this category. Although technically mobile products, most mainstream or midsize laptops tend to stay anchored to one location, or only move around a single home or office.
Less expensive mainstream laptops will have resolutions of 1,280×800 pixels , wide-screen 16:9 models will have resolutions of 1,366×768 pixels, and more-expensive versions can get resolutions all the way up to 1,600×900.
Mainstream laptops Hp dv2000 battery Dell studio 1555 battery have dual-core CPUs, most commonly from Intel’s Core 2 Duo line, along with between 2GB and 4GB of RAM, 250GB or larger 5,400rpm hard drives, and internal DVD-burning optical drives.
This category covers the widest ground in terms of price and features, starting at around $500 and going well past $1,000. Most typical are $700 to $900 configurations.
    Key features:
    14- to 16-inch display
    Dual-core CPU
    Internal optical drive

    Desktop replacement

These massive 17-inch and larger laptops are meant to literally replace your old desktop, monitor, and keyboard combination with a single device that can also be easily transported in a pinch.
At a minimum, you’ll find an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, with more-expensive models trading up to a quad-core Core 2 Quad or the new, more powerful Intel Core i7 processor. The majority of desktop replacement laptops have discrete graphics cards, either for help in playing HD video or for running 3D games.
While Blu-ray drives are available in some mainstream systems, they make the most Acer aspire 5520 battery sense in desktop replacements, which often (but not always) have native screen resolutions that can handle hi-def 1080p content.
The tradeoff is that these laptops tend to have very short battery life. Being big and heavy by definition, they’re unlikely to spend much time away from a wall socket, so PC makers opt for more powerful hardware rather than energy-saving designs.
While 17 inches is the most popular size, there are a handful of 18-inch models, and even a couple that top 20 inches. With sizes nearing those of personal TV monitors, desktop replacement laptops make good hybrid entertainment centers for the den or dorm room, putting your computing, video, and music devices in a single box.
    Key features:
    17-inch (or larger) display
Intel Core 2 Duo of better CPU
    Discrete graphics
    Poor battery life

What laptop accessories do You need?

If you haven’t accessorized your notebook, you haven’t lived. Here are some of the best ways to do it.

    Docking station or port replicator

A docking station contains a mixture of ports, slots, drive bays, and security features, and it usually attaches to the notebook Hp pavilion dv6 battery from underneath. Docking stations come in a variety of shapes, ranging from the same size as your notebook, which is often referred to as a media slice, to much bigger–some stick out five inches past the back of your notebook. As the name implies, a docking station is where you park your notebook when you get back to the office, giving you easy access to your network, along with a bigger monitor, a regular keyboard, additional storage devices, and the convenience of leaving cables plugged in when you walk away from your desk.A port replicator, on the other hand, is a smaller, stripped-down version of a docking station that mainly features–as you might guess–ports, such as USB or S-Video. A port replicator can range from the size of a box of toothpaste to just shy of docking-station stature. When you’re on the road, a port replicator is a convenient way to increase your connectivity.

    Laptop bag

You’re about to drop a couple grand or more on a laptop Hp 510 battery Hp 530 battery , and the last thing you want to do is spend even more money on a carrying case. So, you save a few bucks by going with the manufacturer’s basic case. But basic bags often lack a padded shoulder strap or internal pockets. You’ll be kicking yourself soon when your nine-pound load is cutting a groove into your shoulder and all of your accessories come tumbling out of your bag in a tangled mess. Dig into your wallet for a sturdy, comfortable carrying case, and your shoulder will thank you. Look for padded shoulder straps, reinforced corners, and specialized compartments designed to hold the AC adapter, the extra batteries, and so on.

    Extra battery

If you do even a modest amount of traveling, we recommend getting the largest battery available for your model–or, if you’re wary of the extra bulk that a larger battery Hp elitebook 8530w battery entails, get a second battery. They range from $50 to $300, and they are well worth the money if you plan to regularly spend more than two to three hours away from a wall outlet. Next time you’re trapped on the tarmac working away on your laptop and your primary battery is about to die, you’ll be glad to have that second cell. If you rarely travel with your notebook, however, and your laptop is pretty much always plugged in, don’t bother with a second battery.

    External drives

External drives–storage and media-burning options that hook up to your notebook via cable–can be a pain to carry around and hook up, plus they can be pricey. You’re generally better off buying a notebook that has everything you need out of the box. Nevertheless, external drives are sometimes required. If, for instance, you buy an ultraportable that lacks a built-in CD-ROM drive, you might want an external drive for loading software or reading data discs. Types of external drives include DVD/CD-RW, DVD-rewritable, hard drives, and more. No matter what notebook you buy, we strongly urge you to invest in a thumbdrive that plugs directly into your USB connector sans cable. Priced as low as $15 for 1GB of storage, these little drives are brilliant for transferring small amounts of data between notebooks Hp dv6000 battery or between notebooks and PCs, and they’re much more convenient than burning data onto CD.

    Mouse and keyboard

Working for hours with just a pointing stick or a touch pad can take a toll on your hand, wrist, and forearm. To save yourself some wear and tear, invest in a small travel mouse. These can cost as little as $20, they usually hook up via USB, and they’re very easy to tote. The same advice applies to typing for hours on your notebook’s keyboard. If you plant your notebook on your desk when you work, hook up a USB keyboard and relieve your wrists. If you prefer working without wires, get a wireless mouse and keyboard.

What To Do After Spilling Coffee On A Laptop Computer ?

Accidents happen, and they usually happen in the morning. There’s a fairly decent chance that if you’re as clumsy as me, you’ll eventually drip a bitor a cupof coffee onto your laptop computer.
Here are a few tips for a coffee spill on a laptop computer.
First, turn the computer upside down. Drain out all of the coffee as best as you can, but don’t shake too hard or you could rattle the hard drive and other components in the computer dell latitude d620 battery .
While you’re holding the computer upside down, you should turn it off by holding down its power button until it goes to a black screen. Make sure that it isn’t plugged in, either. Electricity is a big enemy when you spill coffee onto a laptop, as you might expect, so remove the battery, too and don’t try to plug the computer in or restart it until the coffee issue has been completely managed.
Assess the spill. If you spilled a whole cup of coffee onto the laptop, you might have to do a little surgery or get the laptop into a computer repair shop ASAP. If you only spilled a little, you might be alright in letting the computer sit and maybe spraying a little compressed air into the keyboard. Think about the size of the spill and determine which course of action is better; if you spilled coffee over the entire computer and not just one localized portion of it, there’s a good chance that you’ll need to go further to fully fix the issue.
Taking the computer dell inspiron 1720 battery Dell inspiron 5160 battery apart. If you’re fairly handy and you want to manually clean the coffee out of your laptop, it’s usually not too difficult. Most laptop computers have a panel that hides the screws for the keyboard of the device towards the front of the screen.
Once this is removed, the keyboard can be removed and you can use a bit of isopropyl alcohol (not much) and a clean rag to clean up the spilled coffee. In most cases, cleaning the keyboard will be all that’s
necessarythere’s not a huge chance of the coffee making it past this area of the computer unless it was a tremendous amount of liquid. If your keyboard won’t respond once you clean up the computer and restart it, replacing the keyboard will usually solve the issue. You can find replacement keyboards at a variety of computer parts shops online or even eBay.
Computer repair shops. If you’re not too handy, you’ll want to take the computer into a computer repair shop. Avoid chain rip-offs (“rip-off” is just my opinion, by the way) Dell inspiron 640m battery Hp dv6000 battery like Best Buy and find a local computer guy. Be honest about what happened, as they’ll quickly figure it out. I used to work at a computer repair place, and a good tech can diagnose just about anything. To keep your price down, bring in a plate of cookies or something with the laptop. This is an old trick to keep a mechanic’s rates down, and it works on computer techs, too.

Future of Computing Arrives: Smartphone-Laptop Combo

The future of computing just arrived, and short of plugging a computer chip right into your brain, it is perhaps the most promising innovation since the smartphone, with all due respect to the iPad.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well. Yet.
The Motorola Atrix 4G is a dream phone, with a big screen and a superfast dual-core processor that rivals some low-end computers, such as netbooks. What’s brilliant is that Dell d630 battery it docks to a laptop that has no brains: The smartphone’s processor runs the laptop’s screen and keyboard. What you see on the phone, you see on the laptop when you dock the phone. And the laptop’s innards, devoid of any brains, are loaded up with battery life — around 10 hours. What’s more, the laptop charges the phone during docking.
Motorola calls the laptop a Lapdock. History will sort out what this new class of gadget gets called. But history-making it may well be.
This first go at a one-device-fits-all phone/computer points to a future when we won’t need a desktop at home, a laptop for travel, a tablet computer for who-knows-exactly what (the iPad does not replace a phone, nor does it yet replace a laptop for many tasks), and smartphone, each running different software and holding different Dell d830 battery Dell wr050 battery version of important files that requires too much synching.
In combination with the rise in cloud computing — the ability to store your files “out there” — a powerful, fast, compact smartphone/Laptop will the only setup many people need.
Too bad Motorola didn’t deliver on the promise with the Atrix 4G.
The Android-based phone is great, writes David Pogue in the New York Times, but the rest of the setup has too many glitches and limitations to be considered a serious laptop replacement. One problem is that it depends on AT&T’s network to get online. Enough said. Plus, the Lapdock’s clicker is ineffective, making scrolling difficult. “It’s spectacularly awkward,” Pogue writes. That’s a showstopper Acer as07b71 battery Acer um08a31 battery for anyone who needs to edit MS Word files or do any other real work.
But Pogue is spot one when he says this is a “really, really brilliant idea.” And we can’t wait until Motorola (or Apple?) gets the kinks worked out. Then we can finally enjoy the future of computing, and start discussing that chip-brain implant.

Back to the Future for iPad: A welcome addition to the present

The graphics and gameplay may look more like “Back to the Past,” but don’t let that stop you from playing this terrific new “Back to the Future” adventure.

Shortly before the calendar struck 2011, gamers and movie fans alike were treated to something special: a new “Back to the Future” adventure for PC and Mac. It was, by most accounts, a terrific game.
Now it’s time for iPad Dell inspiron 1526 battery owners to get their, er, McFly on: Back to the Future: Episode 1 HD ($6.99) has arrived. And it’s the best thing to grace my tablet in recent memory.
Time (heh) didn’t permit me to check out the PC version, so this represents my first look at the game. Ironically, it’s something of an anachronism, a pleasant throwback to the graphical adventures of the past. If you ever played the old “Space Quest” or “Monkey Island” games, you’ll feel right at home here.
Indeed, this is essentially a puzzle-solving game wrapped in “Back to the Future” trappings. Christopher Lloyd returns as the voice of Doc Brown, and mostly spot-on imitators give voice to Marty, Biff, and other familiar characters.
Although this is a totally new adventure that takes place after the events in the third (and final) movie, the game opens by plunking you into a classic (but cleverly altered Dell inspiron 5150 battery Hp nc8430 battery ) scene from the first movie–a great way to familiarize you with the gameplay mechanics. They’re pretty simple: drag your finger to move Marty around the screen, tap something to examine it, store items in your inventory until needed, and so on.
If you want to know more about the game itself, I’ll refer you to Eric Franklin’s in-depth review. The iPad version has identical content, so I won’t rehash it here. (Plus, I don’t want to spoil any of the fun and clever surprises.)
I will lodge a couple complaints. First, there’s no pause option. Some of the cut scenes run pretty long, and it would be nice if you could stop the action as needed. Second, the load/save game system is unnecessarily confusing.
Finally, and most importantly, the game suffers from a sluggish frame rate and frequent hiccups in the video. This gets annoying in a hurry, to the point where I question Dell d820 battery Hp 510 battery whether Telltale Games should have released the game with such a detracting flaw.
If not for that glaring issue, I’d give Back to the Future: Episode 1 HD a full 5 stars–6, even, for giving us such a wonderful (if somewhat late) tribute to one of the all-time great movies. As it stands, I still consider it a must-have for anyone who wonders what a fourth “Back to the Future” installment might have looked like–and how it would have felt to take part in it.

A Phone That’s the Life of a Laptop & The phone becomes the laptop’s brains

Does the redundancy of your gadgets ever bother you?
You have a phone. A laptop . A desktop PC. A GPS thing. A TV. Maybe a tablet. Each contains the same stuff: a screen, a processor chip and some memory. You’re buying the same components over and over again — in duplicate, triplicate, quadruplicate — just so each device can perform identical functions in different situations.
Well, that does bother Motorola. For several years now, it’s been hammering away at a central idea: since the modern app phone is essentially a computer, why can’t it become a brain that you slip into different docks? That was the idea behind the Bedside Dock (phone becomes touch-screen alarm clock) and the GPS Dock (attaches to your windshield) for certain Motorola phones.
Now comes Motorola’s most compelling, ambitious and exciting idea of all: a phone that can become the brain for a full-blown laptop Hp pavilion dv4 battery Dell d630 battery .
The Motorola Atrix 4G ($200 with a two-year AT&T contract) is a beautiful, loaded, screamingly fast Android phone. The companion laptop — sleek, light, superthin, black aluminum — has no processor, memory or storage of its own. Instead, you insert the phone into a slot behind the screen hinge. The phone becomes the laptop’s brains.
That’s a powerful idea. It means, first of all, that you don’t have to sync anything. Everything lives on the phone; the laptop is simply a more convenient viewer.
It also means that when you’re sitting on a plane or at your desk, you can work with a trackpad, full screen and traditional keyboard.
And it means that your laptop is always online, thanks to the phone’s Internet connection.
Finally, it means that you have to reverse your usual thinking about battery life. The laptop is basically a giant battery. With the phone inserted, you can happily work away for eight or 10 hours on a single charge. In fact, the laptop actually charges the phone while you work. Yes, that’s correct: you’ll get off the plane with a more fully charged phone than when you got on.
Both the phone and the laptop Hp pavilion dv6 battery Dell wr050 battery are gorgeous. The phone has the usual Android goodies, like front and back cameras and hi-def video recording, and it uses Motorola’s MotoBlur software, which can unify the address books and messages from your various online accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and e-mail).

But to make it powerful enough to drive a laptop, Motorola had to give it far more oomph than a typical phone. It has a dual-core processor, which, in English, means “faster than any phone you’ve ever used.” We are talking slick, responsive, satisfying.
The phone also has a fingerprint sensor built into the power button on the top back of the phone Dell d820 battery dell d620 battery . That is, you can unlock and turn on the phone with a single finger. It’s better in theory than in execution, alas: it often takes several finger-swipes before the phone recognizes you. (You can also set up a regular typed-in password, or none.)
This phone doesn’t do much to address America’s cellphone obesity epidemic; you could probably fit an iPhone inside its body cavity and still have room for a pencil. On the other hand, the screen is gigantic — 960 x 540 pixels — which is great when you’re viewing GPS maps, documents and photos.
The laptop looks and feels like a black MacBook Air: 2.4 pounds, all cool brushed aluminum. The flat-topped keys poke up through the aluminum — again, very MacBook Airish. They’re slightly smaller than standard size, but still fine for rapid touch-typing.
The best thing about the whole phone-laptop concept is that you don’t have to think. You can pop the phone into the laptop, or yank it out, without shutting it down or entering any kind of special mode.
After about 10 seconds, whatever was on the phone’s screen appears on the laptop’s screen. It’s wild: you actually see your phone in a window. All of the buttons and icons are clickable with the trackpad clicker. You can even make phone calls in this setup — the laptop  dell xps m1330 battery Dell vostro 1510 battery becomes a speakerphone. It’s a crazy, mind-blowing experience.
    You can even run all your Android apps on the laptop’s 11.6-inch screen. Sadly, the apps don’t actually exploit the much larger laptop screen real estate. If you click the Full Screen button on the phone window, the software magnifies beautifully;
if you’re over 40, you’ll have no problem reading “small” type, which is now bumper-sticker size. But you’re not seeing any additional area — only an enlarged version of what was on the phone screen. Good thing the phone’s screen has such high resolution to begin with.
The laptop also lets you open a second window, containing the Firefox Web browser at full size. That’s handy for doing e-mail, checking online calendars and, of course, surfing the Web.
All of this is so thoughtfully executed, so beautifully designed, that recommending it might seem like a no-brainer. Unfortunately, it’s ultimately a some-brainer, because there are a few flies in the Atrix ointment.
First, scrolling is a serious problem. On the phone, you scroll things with a quick swipe of your finger on the touch screen: your e-mail Inbox, your Twitter feed, your Applications list and so on. But when the phone’s in the laptop Dell vostro 1520 battery , swiping is far more difficult. While pressing down the recalcitrant clicker button, you drag one finger on the trackpad. It’s spectacularly awkward, especially because the phone frequently misinterprets the initial click as an “I want to open this app” gesture. There are Page Up/Page Down keystrokes, but they don’t function in phone apps — only in Firefox.
Second, remember that this is an Android laptop, not a Mac or Windows laptop. You can edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files very comfortably, using the built-in Quickoffice software. But you won’t be running the kinds of programs you could run on a real laptop — games, Photoshop, whatever.
Because the phone runs Flash video, you ought to be able to enjoy TV shows at Hulu.com. But maybe because it’s phone Flash, it’s so jerky that it’s unwatchable, even on a fast Wi-Fi connection.
Third, the Internet speed isn’t what it should be. If you’re in one of the cities where AT&T has finished upgrading its network to 4G (fourth-generation equipment), you’re supposed to get superfast Internet service. In practice, though, the 4G adds nothing. Even when you test it in a 4G town like New York (as Engadget did) or Boston (as I did), the Atrix has an even slower Internet Dell studio 1535 battery Dell studio 1555 battery connection than a non-4G phone. (AT&T’s explanation: the 4G indicator may appear on the phone even when the area’s 4G network upgrade isn’t yet complete.)
Fourth, the phone and the laptop together cost $500 (after $100 rebate). Now, for that money, you could get a nice phone and a full-blown Windows netbook that runs faster and does it all. Of course, you lose most of the perks — a single storage gadget, eternal battery life and so on. And the netbook you buy won’t be anywhere near as beautiful as the Atrix laptop.
But it’s not just the price of the hardware. To use the browser on the laptop, you’re required to pay AT&T an additional $20 a month — a “tethering plan.”
You can also buy a TV dock for the Atrix, with remote control, so that you can view your photos, videos and other stuff on the big screen. There’s also a beautiful wireless Bluetooth keyboard and dell inspiron 6400 battery mouse; together with the TV dock, you can turn any TV into a full-blown Android PC.
The Atrix, then, is three things. It’s an extremely fast, powerful, superbly designed phone. It’s a gorgeous, lightweight, long-lasting laptop that’s tragically clumsy to use.
Above all, it’s a really, really brilliant idea. Here’s hoping that Motorola sticks with its team of fresh-thinking engineers long enough to produce an Atrix II.
